A Swampscott boy was in for a stinging surprise this weekend when he came face-to-face with one of the world’s largest species of jellyfish. Four-year-old River Weinand described the scary moment he was stung by the Lion’s Mane jellyfish while swimming in Swampscott’s Eisman’s beach over the weekend. “It’s like a tree bit me,” River said. “They were maybe yay long and draped over his shoulders, on his back, on his ear, on his chin and neck. And so I immediately started grabbing it off,” his dad Nick Weinand said. The employee was outside Mr. B’s Pizzaria on Cross Street waiting to pick up an order when the pickup truck crashed into him, leaving him injured. “I come out and I see the guy holding his chest,” said shop owner Mehmek Bakirici who heard the crash from the kitchen in the back of the shop. “Blood had come out and I called 911. The victim tried to get out of the way of the oncoming car by running inside the shop but could not move fast enough. “He saw the truck approaching and he ran into the building but he still got injured,” Deputy Fire Chief Bill Hallinam said. Erica Santos, 13, heard the crash and rushed to help the driver of the pickup. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minnesota judge on Monday warned that he’s likely to move the trials of four former police officers charged in George Floyd’s death out of Minneapolis if public officials, attorneys and family members don’t stop speaking out about the case. Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill stopped short of issuing a gag order against attorneys on both sides, but he said he likely will if public statements continue that make it hard to find an impartial jury. Cahill said that would also make him likely to grant a change-of-venue motion if one is filed, as he anticipates. “The court is not going to be happy about hearing comments on these three areas: merits, evidence and guilt or innocence,” Cahill said. The temporary closures affects all beaches, piers, parking lots, beach bike paths, and beach access points beginning on Friday at 12:01 a.m., and lasting through 5 a.m. on Monday, L.A. County officials announced. L.A. County reached a concerning milestone on Monday with another 2,903 coronavirus cases, the highest ever reported in the county, and 22 new deaths. SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A judge approved a joint motion Monday to delay sentencing for nearly two more months for Margaret Hunter, who pleaded guilty along with her husband, former Rep. Duncan Hunter, to federal conspiracy charges for misusing campaign funds to support years of personal expenditures. Margaret Hunter was slated to be sentenced next Monday, but COVID-19- related concerns led the prosecution and defense to jointly agree to postpone her sentencing until Aug. 24, “in the hope that the present public emergency will have abated” by then. BELMONT, Calif. ( KRON ) — Video surveillance has been released of an incident that occurred last weekend at a bar in California. A woman and her friend entered St. James Gate bar and restaurant in Belmont on June 19. The woman apparently was not social distancing and bumping into people inside the bar. The bartender asked the woman to put on her mask, but the woman got upset and allegedly coughed in his face. Security and the owner of the bar kicked the woman and her friend out. As the woman was being escorted out, she flipped people off and knocked over chairs. The incident happened less than 24 hours after the bar reopened for indoor dining after being shut down for three months because of the coronavirus pandemic. The bartender who was coughed on is believed to be doing OK, and is set to be tested for COVID-19. A spokesperson for the facility said that 32 other veteran residents who had tested positive for COVID-19 have since recovered. Sixty employees have also tested positive. The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts and the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division  launched an investigation  into the  Holyoke Soldiers’ Home  earlier this month to examine whether the facility violated the rights of veterans by failing to provide them medical care generally and during the coronavirus pandemic. HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A University of Connecticut student charged with killing two people and seriously injuring a third told a witness “he just flipped” when he fatally slashed the first victim with a sword and he was remorseful, according to an arrest warrant affidavit released Monday. Connecticut State Police released the warrant charging Peter Manfredonia, 23, from Newtown, with murder, attempted murder and assaulting an elderly person in connection with the  violent attacks  in Willington on May 22. He also is expected to be charged with murder in the killing of another man in Derby on May 24. Manfredonia, a UConn senior who was studying finance and mechanical engineering, was arrested in Hagerstown, Maryland, on May 27, ending a six-day police search in several states. Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred in Wentworth’s Location, New Hampshire on Sunday, officials said. Troopers responding to a reported crash on Route 16 at 12:40 p.m. determined that a 2000 Suzuki had been traveling northbound when it crossed over the center line and crashed into a guardrail. The driver, Brendan Provencal, 29, of Libson Falls, Maine, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are investigating but said speed was a contributing cause. Last December, a film crew for the Patriots’ “Do Your Job” web series was caught on camera filming the Bengals, who the Patriots were playing the next week, from the press box, and asking if they could delete the footage. SAN DIEGO (CNS) – San Diego County public health officials have reported a single-day record of 497 new positive COVID-19 cases and one additional death Sunday, bringing the county’s totals to 13,334 cases and 361 fatalities. Sunday marked the seventh time in eight days that health authorities reported more than 300 new COVID-19 cases. On Friday, the county reported 440 new cases, the highest number until Sunday. On Saturday, the county reported 436 new cases. The death reported Sunday was of a woman who was in her early 60s, officials said. The woman had one or more underlying health conditions. The county recorded 8,301 tests Saturday and 6% were positive new cases. The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive tests is 3.9%. Of the new cases, 1,747 (13.1%) have required hospitalization and 479 (3.6%) of all cases had to be admitted to an intensive care unit. It was the year her baby boy Lucas “Tripp” McCardle lost 70 percent of his brain matter, became a quadriplegic, and lost his hearing and sight. He was 7 months old. The crushing, frightening ordeal began with a fever of 106. “When we took him to the emergency room initially for that fever, I was thinking the whole time we were driving down there I’ve never heard of a person with a fever that high,” said Rebekah McCardle, Tripp’s mom. Nonetheless, the McCardles were sent home with their baby and some Tylenol. The next day mother and son were on a chopper being flown to the Children’s Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. The McCardles live in Purvis, Mississippi. When Rebekah learned of a Phenix City, Alabama child with a similar story, she reached out to sister station WRBL in 2017. LA JOLLA (CNS) – A woman’s body was found Sunday on the shoreline below the cliffs in La Jolla, police said. At 6:40 a.m., someone found the body about 75 feet below the cliffs near the 1300 block of Coast Walk, north of Torrey Pines Road, according to Officer Tony Martinez of the San Diego Police Department. Lifeguards recovered the body, which was taken with a Jet Ski to La Jolla Shores, where they met with officials from the county Medical Examiner’s Office. Private First Class Vanessa Guillen hasn’t been seen since late April, when she disappeared from Fort Hood in Texas. Investigators suspect foul play and are looking into allegations of sexual harassment. Family members have been holding weekly rallies in front of Fort Hood, saying they want to keep people focused on finding Guillen. “We’re going to fight for my sister. Private First Class Vanessa Guillen hasn’t been seen since late April, when she disappeared from Fort Hood in Texas. Investigators suspect foul play and are looking into allegations of sexual harassment. SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Police Department released video Sunday of the officer involved shooting downtown. The entire video is comprised of footage from several different sources. It includes surveillance footage, video from a smart street light, and body-cam footage from the two officers involved in the shooting. The two San Diego police officers, who were in the 1200 block of Sixth Avenue at 5:45 p.m. Saturday noticed a man leaving a building on the west side of the street and thought he resembled a man sought in connection with a recent robbery, according to Lt. Matt Dobbs of the San Diego Police Department. The suspect involved in this incident has been identified as 25 year-old Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra of San Diego, according to SDPD. A man is facing drunk driving charges after his car went off the road and crashed, catching on fire, in Canterbury, New Hampshire Saturday, police said. Troopers responding to reports of reckless driving on I-93 at 6:45 p.m. saw a car veering between lanes before leaving the road and crashing into trees, police said. A trooper and passing motorist pulled the driver out of the car, and he was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Police allegedly determined the man was impaired and Vito Paulino, 43, of Manchester, New Hampshire, was charged with driving while under the influence.
