Greenland prime minister says US will not get Greenland

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. The prime minister of  Greenland  pushed back Sunday against assertions by U.S. President Donald Trump that America will take control of the island territory. Greenland, a huge, resource-rich island in the Atlantic, is a self-governing territory of Denmark, a NATO ally of the United States. Trump wants to annex the territory, claiming it’s needed for national security purposes. “President Trump says that the United States ‘will get Greenland.’ Let me be clear: The United States will not get it. We do not belong to anyone else. We decide our own future,” Jens-Frederik Nielsen said in a Facebook post. Nielsen’s post comes a day after the U.S. president told NBC News that  military force wasn’t off the table  with regard to acquiring Greenland. In Saturday’s interview, Trump allowed that “I think there’s a good possibility that we could do it without military force.” “This is world peace, this ...

Langford and García both homer in the 6th to push Rangers past Red Sox 3-2

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Wyatt Langford and Adolis García hit solo home runs in the sixth inning to put the Texas Rangers over the Boston Red Sox 3-2 on Sunday. The homers came after Boston scored twice in the top of the inning off Texas’ bullpen to spoil Jacob deGrom’s first start of the season. DeGrom allowed two hits in five shutout innings, lifted after nearing his pitch count at 73. Langford’s opposite-field homer off rookie Richard Fitts (0-1) barely cleared the wall in the right-field corner. Two batters later, García blasted an 0-2 sweeper into the second deck in left field. The Red Sox scored twice in the sixth inning off Shawn Armstrong (1-0), one run unearned, to take the lead. Wilyer Abreu hit a two-out, 0-2 opposite-field double into the left-field corner to score Kristian Campbell and came around when Rangers third baseman Ezequiel Durán threw low to first base. Texas took a 1-0 lead in the second,...

Americans haven’t been this worried about rising unemployment since 2009, survey shows

Washington (CNN) —  Americans are not only increasingly fearful of higher inflation — with President Donald Trump set to announce a sweeping spate of tariffs in just a few days — but many more are now dreading rising unemployment. Consumer sentiment tanked 12% this month, the University of Michigan said in its latest survey released Friday. That was a slightly steeper decline than the one reported  in a preliminary reading  earlier this month. Respondents blamed Trump’s erratic trade war for their jitters, the survey said. “Consumers continue to worry about the potential for pain amid ongoing economic policy developments,” Joanne Hsu, the survey’s director, said in a release. “Notably, two-thirds of consumers expect unemployment to rise in the year ahead, the highest reading since 2009.” On Wednesday, Trump is set to announce duties that match the ones foreign countries impose on the United States, so-called reciprocal tariffs, which he has referred to as “the big one....

One night only: Ed Sheeran to host pop-up pub in Ipswich

Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is set to host a pop-up pub in Ipswich Friday night, and fans are lining up for the limited-time experience. The town of Ipswich was on “Sheeran watch,” waiting for the English star to arrive on scene. Fans have been lining up outside The Old Phone Pub since 5 a.m., hoping to catch a glimpse of Sheeran — or a selfie, if they’re lucky — outside. Sheeran’s team built the pop-up pub to film a video for his new song called “Old Phone.” Tickets were given to a handful of fans this week. To snag a ticket, you had to submit an old image, text, or video from your phone to a special phone number — and they might be used in Sheeran’s music video. The pub is a working restaurant and bar, and the musician chose the spot because he is from Ipswich, England. Danielle Murphy was the first person in line in front of the pub Friday. “There’s been lots of rumors flying, so a couple of different scenarios, but possibly a meet-and-greet, I heard, or maybe they’re filmin...

Parasitic wasp preserved in 99 million-year-old amber was ‘beyond imagination,’ scientists say

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. (CNN) —  A newly identified parasitic wasp that buzzed and flew among dinosaurs 99 million years ago evolved a bizarre mechanism to snare other creatures and force them to unwittingly shelter its young, according to new research. Paleontologists studied 16 specimens of the tiny wasp preserved in amber dating back to the Cretaceous period that was previously unearthed in Myanmar. The previously unknown species, now named Sirenobethylus charybdis, had a Venus flytrap-like structure on its abdomen that could have allowed it to trap other insects, the researchers reported Thursday in the  journal BMC Biology . “When I looked at the first specimen, I noticed this expansion at the tip of the abdomen, and I thought this must be an air bubble. It’s quite often you see air bubbles around specimens in amber,” said study coauthor Lars Vilhelmsen, a wasp expert and curator at the Natural History Museum of Denmark in...

Marjorie Taylor-Greene attacks NPR and PBS as ‘communist,’ calls for funding to ‘end’

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. (CNN) —  Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene on Wednesday used a DOGE subcommittee hearing to call for the defunding and dismantling of the company that provides NPR and PBS with federal funds. For Taylor-Greene and other House Republicans, today’s hearing was about tarnishing PBS and NPR with accusations of bias and targeting them for defunding. For the broadcasters, today was about defending their existence. The hearing, titled “Anti-American Airwaves: Holding the heads of NPR and PBS Accountable,” started at 10 am ET, and featured testimony from NPR CEO Katherine Maher and PBS CEO Paula Kerger, as well as a local station operator and a conservative critic of taxpayer-funded media. The hearing, which was chaired by Taylor-Greene, was meant to advance long-held Republican arguments against PBS and NPR, including that their programming is “communist.” In the final minutes of the two-hour hearing that saw repeated c...

Man arrested in connection with death of 23-month-old boy in Keene, NH

A 22-year-old man was arrested Tuesday in connection with the January 2024 death of a toddler in Keene, N.H., according to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s office. Annthoni Bliss was charged with one count of second-degree murder in violation of RSA, “under circumstances manifesting an extreme indifference to the value of human life,” in the death of 23-month-old Luca Hudson, the office said in a statement. On Jan. 14, 2024, emergency crews responded to an apartment in Keene for a report of an infant in medical distress, the attorney general said. When police and medics arrived, they found Hudson unconscious and not breathing, the statement said. Hudson was taken to a hospital, where he died three days later, according to authorities. The medical examiner’s office determined Hudson’s cause of death was homicide, from blunt head trauma. Investigators obtained a warrant for Bliss’ arrest in connection with Hudson’s death. He was taken into custody and is expected to be arraigned ...

What about the weekend?

After morning sunshine, clouds took over for the afternoon today and those clouds will be with us tomorrow too. It’s not straight overcast all day long, but rather mostly cloudy skies for your Wednesday. Out of those clouds could be a spotty rain or snow shower, but they will be isolated — about a 30% shot. The Cape has the shower chance for most of the day, but for the rest of us, the shower chance will be confined to the afternoon and evening hours. It could be a passing rain shower, or even a few snowflakes closer to, and after sunset. Thankfully, the wind will back down from what we saw today. We’ll finish the week with more sunshine Thursday and Friday, and temperatures returning to the 50s by Friday. Both days will be on the breezy side, but enjoy that sunshine and dry weather because there are some big changes on the way for the weekend. So here’s what we know about the weekend — and I’ll be honest, there’s a lot we don’t know about the weekend either and I’ll explain why. A...

Largest fully preserved dinosaur claw unearthed in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. (CNN) —  With distinctive two-fingered claws, the remains of a previously unknown species of dinosaur suggest it looked like a bizarre mix of sloth, giraffe and cult movie hero Edward Scissorhands, according to new research. Paleontologists unearthed the fossil in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert, and the find is unique because the sheath of one of the digits is intact. Made of keratin (the same material as fingernails), the sheath reveals that the claw itself was much longer than the underlying bones. It is the largest claw of its kind found fully preserved in this way, researchers say. “It’s close to a foot in size,” said paleontologist Darla Zelenitsky, an associate professor at the University of Calgary in Canada and coauthor of a study on the discovery published in the journal iScience. “This is by far the biggest claw preserved for a dinosaur that has that keratinous sheath on it.” The dinosaur has been given th...

Flatbed truck hits bridge in Gardner, knocking off forklift it was transporting

A flatbed truck hit a bridge in Gardner with its payload Monday, knocking off the forklift it was transporting, officials said. Crews responded to the lower Parker Street railroad bridge after the forklift was knocked into the road, according to the Gardner Fire Department. The forklift was leaking hydraulic oil, but crews stopped the spill before it trickled into any nearby storm drains, the department said. A crane was seen removing the damaged forklift from the middle of the road. UN to reduce staff in Gaza and blames Israel for a strike that killed its employee

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The United Nations said Monday it will “reduce its footprint” in  the Gaza Strip  after an Israeli tank strike hit one of its compounds last week, killing one staffer and wounding five others. The world body will temporarily remove about a third of its approximately 100 international staffers working in Gaza, U.N. Secretary-General spokesman Stéphane Dujarric. He pointed to the increased danger after I  srael relaunched its military campaign  last week with bombardment that has since killed hundreds of Palestinians. Israel has also cut off all food, medicine, aid and other supplies to Gaza’s population for the past three weeks. Dujarric’s statement was the U.N’s first to point the finger at Israel in the March 19 explosion at the  U.N. guesthouse  in central Gaza. He said that “based on the information currently available,” the strikes on the site “wer...

A legal showdown looms in Israel as Netanyahu moves to oust top officials

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel again is  fighting a war  on multiple fronts, but a battle is also brewing inside the country. Tens of thousands of Israelis have joined anti-government  protests  in recent days. A former Supreme Court chief justice has warned of civil war. And experts are saying a constitutional crisis could be on the horizon if the Israeli government moves ahead with plans to fire top legal and security officials. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced last week  he was firing Ronen Bar , the head of the Shin Bet internal security service, citing a crisis of confidence sparked by the failures to prevent Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attacks. Netanyahu’s government has also launched a process to dismiss the attorney general, accusing her of obstructing its agenda. The moves come as the Shin Bet is investigating a possible infiltration of Netanyahu’s office by an Arab c...

Figure skating’s world championships are headed to Boston, another chance to heal after DC crash

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — It has been nearly two months since  American Airlines Flight 5342  lifted off from a wintry runway in southeast Kansas, destined for Washington, D.C., with dozens of members of the tight-knit figure skating community aboard it. They were just kids, accompanied by parents and coaches, who had been attending a development camp that followed the U.S. championships in Wichita. Many had posted on social media what they had learned — those jumps and spins and techniques that form the foundation of their sport — and how eager they were to share their newfound knowledge back home. They never got that chance. On that January night, their regional jet was on approach to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport when it  collided with an Army helicopter,  killing all 67 people aboard the two aircraft. “I’ll always have them in my head and my heart,” said world champion Ilia Malinin,...
