US pledges to put Russia on defensive at UN Security Council

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. worked Sunday to ramp up diplomatic and financial pressure on Russia over Ukraine, promising to put Moscow on the defensive at the U.N. Security Council as lawmakers on Capitol Hill said they were nearing agreement on “the mother of all sanctions.” The American ambassador to the United Nations said the Security Council will press Russia hard in a Monday session to discuss its massing of troops near Ukraine and fears it is planning an invasion. “Our voices are unified in calling for the Russians to explain themselves,” Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said of the U.S. and the other council members on ABC’s “This Week.” ”We’re going into the room prepared to listen to them, but we’re not going to be distracted by their propaganda.” Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin is bent on waging an “attack on democracy,” not just on a single country. It’s a case that some senior foreign policy figures have

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man severely injured in a 2019 crash in New Hampshire that killed seven members of his motorcycle club has filed a lawsuit against the Massachusetts Registrar of Motor Vehicles for allegedly failing to suspend the driver’s license of the man charged in connection with the crash. Joshua Morin, of Dalton, alleges in his lawsuit filed last week in Berkshire Superior Court that the agency acted willfully, wantonly or recklessly when it failed to process thousands of license suspensions and revocations reported from out-of-state,  The Berkshire Eagle reported . That failure allowed Volodymyr Zhukovskyy, whose license had been suspended in Connecticut after an operating under the influence charge, to continue driving, according to the lawsuit. Connecticut sent notice of Zhukovskyy’s license suspension to Massachusetts, but the notice was not processed because of “a defect” in t

Sun-Filled With a Cold Wind for Clean-Up After Yesterday’s Nor’easter

If you’re getting ready to head out to dig out after yesterday’s nor’easter, be sure to bundle up. Wind chills will be around 0° by noon, and remain in the single digits through the afternoon. Speaking of yesterday’s powerhouse of a storm, southeastern MA and a few towns along the North Shore received 2 FEET or more of snow. The jackpot area looks to be Stoughton, Canton, and Sharon where over 30″ of snow fell. https://twitter.com/JackieLayerOn7/status/1487791171405586436 Boston was just shy of reaching the 2 foot mark, but as far as January snowstorms, it was the second highest January snowstorm on record. Wind gusts were also damaging yesterday, especially at the coast where gusts varied from 60-80 mph. For the forecast for today, thankfully we do have the sunshine today. Highs will be in the 20s. Tonight it will be another cold one with temperatures varying from 7-14°. Tomorrow is another day with mostly sunny skies and highs into the upper 20s. We start a warmi

NCAA regulation of college athlete NIL rules inconsistent

As the market for college athlete to earn money off their names, images and likenesses rapidly evolves, NCAA enforcement is faced with the tricky task of trying to police activities currently unregulated by detailed, uniform rules. NCAA Vice President of Enforcement Jon Duncan  told the Associated Press that letters of inquiry have gone out to multiple schools over the last few months. He declined to identify the schools but said the letters are not indicative of a formal investigation and they are frequently used for an assortment of reasons. “It’s just dialogue with a school to get more information about whether violations have occurred,” he said this week. The NCAA lifted most restrictions on athletes earning money through sponsorship deals or as paid endorsers last summer  after numerous states passed laws that usurped the association’s rules. The NCAA enacted an interim policy that  flung open a new market , but with no consistency from state to state. Schools were told to crea

You’re trapped in a blizzard. Do you know what to do next to survive?

(CNN) — Warm thoughts of young romance — not the cold, harsh possibilities of a Midwestern road trip in winter — were on Dawn O’Hair’s mind as she left Chicago for Indianapolis to see her boyfriend. Her weekend visit, back in the winter of 1997-98, did not go well. After a spat with her beau, O’Hair got back into her car very early on a Monday morning to return to Chicago and her job. She should have stayed put. The 23-year-old was driving up Interstate 65 straight into a blizzard. “I ended up in whiteout conditions. I had trouble maintaining control in my 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier,” she said. “The wind was crazy. The snow was blowing sideways. It was super hard to see. It was horrible.” “I got nervous and decided to pull over [but] my car got stuck,” she said. “I didn’t know what to do. I got out and tried to figure out a way to get traction, but without luck.” And there she was — in a real mess. She hadn’t checked the forecasts. She had nothing particularly warm to wear. No blanke

Millions of routine vaccinations have been missed amid the COVID-19 pandemic

(CNN) — Millions of people in the United States are behind on their Covid-19 vaccinations, and millions more have missed other routine vaccinations throughout the pandemic. Long before the coronavirus, public health officials were concerned about low levels of routine vaccinations that are recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for adults and adolescents for diseases like flu and HPV. A sharp drop in uptake over the two years of the pandemic has cut into the progress that has been made. Adults and adolescents have missed more than 37 million routine vaccinations during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to  an analysis of insurance claims by Avalere , a health care consulting firm. The firm compared monthly claims from January 2020 through June 2021 against baselines from 2019. On average, the analysis found, monthly claims were down 32% for adults and 36% for adolescents compared with 2019. Vaccinations ticked up briefly in March 2021 but otherwise consisten

The IRS website will soon require facial recognition to log in to your account

(CNN) — The next time you try to log in to the Internal Revenue Service’s website you’ll be urged to use facial-recognition software to verify you are who you say you are. The verification process includes taking a picture of a photo ID, like a driver’s license or passport, and then taking a video selfie with a smartphone or computer so software can compare the two. It’s part of a partnership the IRS has with ID.me, a fast-growing company that uses facial recognition software as part of its identity-verification process. For now, this process is optional if you already have an IRS username and password. But if you don’t, and you want to use online tools to request an online tax transcript or see information regarding your tax payments or economic impact payments, you’ll need to sign up with ID.me. And starting this summer, those old IRS usernames and passwords will no longer work. As CNN reported  last year , ID.me already verifies identities for more than half of all states’ unempl

The notice, listed in a summary of case filings available online, should lead to mental health exams of 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley, who is charged as an adult with murder and other crimes for the shooting, which also wounded six other students and a teacher. Experts will consider whether the teen understood the wrongfulness of his conduct on the day of the shooting. The lawsuit, meanwhile, was announced  on behalf of the parents of Tate Myre, who was slain Nov. 30, and other students who witnessed the shootings. It alleges negligence by school officials and Crumbley’s parents over the attack. “We’re sad and heartbroken — our lives forever chang
