Israel to offer 4th vaccine dose to most vulnerable

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel has approved a fourth vaccine dose for people most vulnerable to COVID-19, becoming the first country to do so as it braces for a wave of infections fueled by the omicron variant. Nachman Ash, the director general of the Health Ministry, announced the decision at a press conference late on Thursday. He says the decision is based on early research, and that officials will consider expanding the administration of a fourth dose to more of the public as they assess the situation. Israel was among the first countries to roll out Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine a year ago and began freely offering boosters last summer. But it still saw a wave of infections blamed on the delta variant, and officials have warned of another driven by the fast-spreading omicron. Earlier Thursday, Israel received its first shipment of pills that treat the worst effects of COVID-19. It’s among of the first countries to receive Pfizer’s Paxlovid, a pill that can be taken at home to ward of

‘Logistical nightmare’: Mass. Teachers Association blasts Baker’s post-holiday testing plan for educators

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. Expressing great concern over the sharp spike in COVID-19 cases driven by the highly contagious omicron variant, the Massachusetts Teachers Association blasted Gov. Charlie Baker’s post-holiday testing plan for educators, calling it a “logistical nightmare.” Baker and Education Commissioner Jeffrey Riley on Wednesday announced the state had purchased 200,000 at-home testing kits that will be distributed to school districts throughout the state so teachers and staff can test for COVID-19 before they return to work after the holiday break. In a statement issued Thursday, MTA President Merrie Najimy said the plan lacks a systematic, inclusive, and comprehensive approach to protecting public health and that it jeopardizes educators’ attempts to maintain safe in-person learning as schools reopen. “This decision, made without consultation with educators’ unions and local stakeholders, is one more example of the fail

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A 28-year-old giraffe, one of the longest known to live in captivity in the U.S., died on Wednesday in Providence, Rhode Island. The Roger Williams Park Zoo said the female Masai giraffe, Sukari, had age-related ailments including arthritis. The husbandry, animal care and veterinary teams decided to euthanize her after determining that they were no longer keeping her comfortable, the Providence Journal reported. “In addition to exploring therapeutic options, we also made behavioral and environmental changes, but she didn’t respond as we had hoped. Sukari reached an age that is rare in the giraffe world, and we are glad that she was able to spend her senior years here contentedly until now,” said Jessica Lovstad, a clinical veterinarian at the zoo, in a statement. The zoo said she was one of the oldest Masai giraffes in the country and that females of the species in captivity typically liv

FDA says Covid-19 antigen tests may be less sensitive to Omicron variant, but they’re still an important tool

(CNN) — The US Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday that quick antigen tests people take at home may be less sensitive to picking up the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, but health officials say they’re still a useful tool. The FDA said its recent studies with the National Institutes of Health showed that although the antigen tests detected the Omicron variant, they did so with less sensitivity — meaning they’ll spot an infection less often. The agency said it could not share any information on how much less sensitive any of the tests might be to the Omicron variant, but it is working to get more details. “Studies are under way to confirm the reason for the apparent decreased sensitivity. Once that is known, adjustments to existing tests can be undertaken by each developer with support from the FDA, if appropriate,” the FDA told CNN in a statement. Antigen tests are generally known to be less sensitive than PCR tests done in labs, but they are fast, more affordable and easy

2 men indicted on murder charge in fatal Norwood shooting

Two men have been indicted on a charge of murder in connection with a fatal shooting in Norwood earlier this year that left a Boston man dead. A Norfolk grand jury on Wednesday returned an indictment charging Anthony Loper-Feaster, 25, of Salem, and Ernest Payne, 27, of Cambridge, with murder in the shooting death of Shakim Lewis-Johnson, 28, according to Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey. Prosecutors say Lewis-Johnson was shot and killed as he was leaving a home of a friend on Sept. 19. Payne remains at-large with an active warrant for his arrest. “Anyone with information as to his whereabouts is urged to contact law enforcement immediately,” Morrissey said in a news release. Loper-Feaster was arrested in October. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. Widespread flight cancellations continue as omicron spreads

NEW YORK (AP) — Hundreds of flights were cancelled Wednesday as the omicron variant creates havoc both for travelers and for airlines that are having to cobble together flight crews as pilots, flight attendants and ground crews become infected or are exposed to others who have been. More than 850 flights were cancelled by midday Wednesday and that number has ticked higher throughout the day, according to data from the flight-tracking website FlightAware. There were nearly 1,300 cancellations for flights entering, leaving or inside the U.S. Tuesday, and about 1,500 on Monday. Cancellations began to spike the day before Christmas during what is already a buzzing pace for airlines this time of year. Delta, United and JetBlue have all said that the omicron variant was causing enough staffing issues that flights were cancelled. SkyWest led U.S. carriers with 195 cancellations, followed by United with 158 and Delta with 103. SkyWest, a regional airline based in Utah, has suffered an elev

WHO chief worried about ‘tsunami’ of omicron, delta cases

BERLIN (AP) — The head of the World Health Organization said Wednesday that he’s worried about the omicron and delta variants of COVID-19 combining to produce a “tsunami” of cases, but said he’s still hopeful that the world will put the worst of the pandemic behind it in 2022. Two years after the coronavirus first emerged, top officials with the U.N. health agency cautioned that it’s still too early to be reassured by initial data suggesting that omicron, the latest variant, leads to milder disease. First reported last month in southern Africa, it is already the dominant variant in the United States and parts of Europe. And after 92 of the WHO’s 194 member countries missed a target to vaccinate 40% of their populations by the end of this year, Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged everyone to make a “new year’s resolution” to get behind a campaign to vaccinate 70% of countries’ populations by the beginning of July. According to WHO’s figures, the number of COVID-19 cases

A travel nightmare is setting up from coast to coast as holiday travelers return home

(CNN) — As the holiday hangover starts to wear off and the daunting trip home is facing you head on, Mother Nature isn’t offering any favors. Looks like the weather from coast to coast is putting on one last show for the final week of 2021. Ice and snow, rain and freezing temperatures will impact millions on their journey home from their holidays. This will make for extremely dangerous conditions on the roads and the possibility of even more airline delays on top of those already caused by the surging coronavirus. Mass. gas prices not falling as fast as elsewhere

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. Gasoline prices in Massachusetts have been ticking downward over the last month, but the pace of change has been slower than the national average and Bay Staters continue to pay more at the pump than drivers in many other states. That’s down 1 cent from the average price a week ago and 4 cents from the average price one month ago. Compared to last year, gas prices are still elevated, landing $1.19 higher than the $2.19 per gallon average price on Dec. 27, 2020, AAA Massachusetts said. “Gasoline prices fluctuated over the past few days as fears of an omicron-driven economic slowdown were countered by news of a severe fire at a major oil refinery in Texas,” said AAA Massachusetts Director of Public and Government Affairs Mary Maguire. It takes effect Jan. 1, and Democrats already have drafted legislation seeking to repeal the new restrictions and to establish state-level protection for abortion access. Some also want to include the right to make reproductive medical decisions a constitutional right. “Make no mistake, effective January first, the state of New Hampshire will be denying a woman the dignity to make personal, private decisions and instead inserting government into medical choices,” Rep.
