Beck throws 4 TD passes and Frazier runs for 3 scores to lead No. 8 Georgia past UMass, 59-21

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Coach Kirby Smart hopes some ugly breakdowns by his defense in No. 8 Georgia’s otherwise dominant 59-21 win over Massachusetts on Saturday will provide lessons his team can use in its final regular-season game. Smart says the most important lesson is about more than missed tackles. He says his players lacked the energy he saw from visiting UMass and that Georgia can’t make the same mistake when it plays in-state rival Georgia Tech on Friday night. “I hate to say it, but I don’t know if our guys were as energized as their guys were,” Smart said, adding the “want-to and desire” was “the biggest thing” that kept the visiting Minutemen competitive in the first half. Ultimately, Georgia’s advantage in talent was the difference. Carson Beck threw four touchdown passes and Nate Frazier set career highs by rushing for 136 yards and three scores as the Bulldogs tried to protect their College Football Playoff hopes. Georgia (9-2, No. 10 CFP) needed the big offense from Be

Texas school board approves optional curriculum that incorporates Bible lessons for K-5 classes

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. (CNN) —  Public schools in Texas now have the option to use a new, state-written curriculum infused with Bible stories after the state’s school board voted in favor of the material on Friday. A slim majority of the board’s 15 members – eight to seven – voted to keep the Bluebonnet Learning material on a list of K-5 reading and English language arts materials for potential use in the 2025-26 school year. The material was developed by the Texas Education Agency, a state body overseeing public school education, headed by Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath. Critics of the curriculum argue it heavily favors Christianity over other faiths. Some have suggested the teachings violate the  “establishment clause”  of the First Amendment, which states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” Notably, Texas has independent school districts, meaning each district decides what is taught

Matt Gaetz withdraws as President-elect Donald Trump’s attorney general pick

WASHINGTON (AP) —  Matt Gaetz  withdrew Thursday as President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general following continued scrutiny over a federal sex trafficking investigation that cast doubt on the former congressman’s ability to be confirmed as the nation’s chief federal law enforcement officer. The Florida Republican’s announcement came one day after meeting with senators in an effort to win their support for his confirmation to lead the Justice Department. “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition,” Gaetz said in a statement announcing his decision. “There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Jussie Smollett’s conviction in 2019 attack on himself is overturned

(AP) — The Illinois Supreme Court on Thursday overturned actor  Jussie Smollett’s  conviction on charges that he staged a racist and homophobic attack against himself in downtown Chicago in 2019 and lied to police. The  state’s highest court ruled  that a special prosecutor should not have been allowed to intervene after the Cook County state’s attorney initially dropped charges against Smollett in exchange for forfeiting his $10,000 bond and conducting community service. The ruling and the appeal did not address Smollett’s continued claim of innocence. Smollett, who is Black and gay, claimed two men assaulted him, spouted racial and homophobic slurs and tossed a noose around his neck, leading to a massive search for suspects by Chicago police detectives and kicking up an international uproar. Prosecutors to oppose dismissing Trump’s hush money conviction, but say sentencing can be postponed

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. NEW YORK (AP) — New York prosecutors said Tuesday they’ll oppose any effort to dismiss President-elect Donald Trump’s hush money conviction as his sentencing looms, but they expressed some openness to delaying the case until after his impending second term. In a court filing Tuesday, the Manhattan district attorney’s office said Trump’s forthcoming presidency isn’t grounds for dropping a case that was already tried. But “given the need to balance competing constitutional interests,” prosecutors said, “consideration must be given” to potentially freezing the case until after he’s out of office. Trump was  convicted in May  of falsifying business records to cover up a scheme to influence the 2016 election by paying hush money to a porn actor who said they’d had sex. Trump denies the allegations. Juan M. Merchan had given prosecutors until Tuesday to share their thoughts on how to proceed with the case, which had b

Trump names Brendan Carr, senior GOP leader at FCC, to lead the agency

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday named Brendan Carr, the senior Republican on the Federal Communications Commission, as the new chairman of the agency tasked with regulating broadcasting, telecommunications and broadband. Carr is a longtime member of the commission and served previously as the FCC’s general counsel. He has been unanimously confirmed by the Senate three times and was nominated by both Trump and President Joe Biden to the commission. The FCC is an independent agency that is overseen by Congress, but Trump has suggested he wanted to bring it under tighter White House control, in part to use the agency to punish TV networks that cover him in a way he doesn’t like. Carr has of late embraced Trump’s ideas about social media and tech. Carr wrote a section devoted to the FCC in “  Project 2025 ,” a sweeping blueprint for  gutting the federal workforce  and dismantling federal agencies in a second Trump administration produced by the conser

Stafford throws for 4 TDs, 2 to Kupp and 1 to Nacua, to lead Rams past Patriots 28-22

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Matthew Stafford threw for 295 yards and four touchdowns, including a 69-yard score to Cooper Kupp on the second play of the second half to help the Los Angeles Rams pull away and beat the New England Patriots 28-22 on Sunday. New England trailed 14-10 after Rams kicker Joshua Karty’s 26-yard field-goal attempt at the end of the first half clanged off the right upright. Los Angeles received the kick to start the second half, and on second down Stafford found Kupp near midfield; Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones dove for the pass and missed, leaving no one between Kupp and the end zone. The Patriots drove into Los Angeles territory, with a first-and-goal from the Rams 5, but settled for a field goal. On the Rams’ next possession, Stafford found Colby Parkinson in the corner of the end zone to make it 28-13. A missed extra point and a false start on fourth-and-1 doomed two Patriots’ attempts to come back. New England got the ball back at its own 10 with 2:14

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. BOSTON (AP) — Brayden Schenn scored 2:53 into overtime and the St. Louis Blues beat the Boston Bruins 3-2 on Saturday to halt a four-game losing streak. St. Louis native Trent Frederic had both goals for Boston, which is 2-1-2 in its last five games. With the Bruins clinging to a 2-1 lead, Nathan Walker converted a feed in front to tie it midway in the third period. The Blues had grabbed a 1-0 edge on Radek Faksa’s goal 6:25 into the game before the 26-year-old Frederic scored twice in under three minutes. His first came from the top of the crease off a nifty tipped, between-the legs pass from Georgii Merkulov, who was called up from AHL Providence before the game. Frederic’s second was a tip of Mason Lohrei’s shot from the point. Positioned to goalie Jordan Binnington’s right, he redirected the puck inside the far post. It was the second meeting between the teams this week, with  Boston getting a 3-2 comebac

35 killed after driver plows car into crowds at sports center in China’s deadliest known attack in a decade

Hong Kong (CNN) —  Thirty-five people were killed in southern China after a man plowed his car into crowds exercising at an outdoor sports center on Monday evening, according to police, in the country’s deadliest known attack on the public in a decade. Another 43 people were injured and hospitalized in the rampage in the southern city of Zhuhai, local police said in a statement Tuesday. Police said the driver, identified as a 62-year-old man surnamed Fan, was apprehended while trying to flee the scene. An initial investigation suggested he was unhappy with the outcome of a divorce settlement, they added. The death toll is the highest China has seen since 2014, when a string of terrorist attacks rocked the far western region of Xinjiang. But sudden episodes of violence in recent months targeting random members of the public – including school children – have surged across the country as economic growth stutters, unnerving a public long accustomed low violent crime rates and ubiquitou

Dave Coulier, ‘Full House’ star, diagnosed with cancer

(CNN) —  Dave Coulier, an actor and comedian who found fame as Uncle Joey on “Full House,” has revealed he has been diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a blood cancer. Coulier shared the news Wednesday  during an interview on “Today.”  He told the show’s co-anchor Hoda Kotb that he was diagnosed five weeks ago. “In that time I’ve had three surgeries, I’ve had chemo, I’ve lost a little bit of hair,” he said, patting his head. “I kind of look like a baby bird now, but it has been a rollercoaster ride, for sure.” Coulier said he has “B cell lymphoma,” which he described as “aggressive.” “The onset of this growing lymphoma in my groin area was very quick so I said ‘Something’s not right, I have a golf ball down here,’” he told Kotb. “And so we biopsed it, we took it out, and they said ‘You know, we wish we had better news for you, but you have B cell lymphoma, we need to get you into chemotherapy right away.’” According to the  American Cancer Society , non-Hodgkin lymphoma (
