Interstate is closed outside Atlanta as residents evacuate due to a chemical plant fire

CONYERS, Ga. (AP) — Some residents east of Atlanta were evacuated while others were told to shelter in place Sunday to avoid contaminants from a chemical plant fire that sent dark, billowing gray smoke into the air. Interstate 20 was shut down in both directions in the area, the Georgia Department of Transportation said in a post on X. The fire ignited when a sprinkler head malfunctioned around 5 a.m. Sunday at the BioLab plant in Conyers, Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel told reporters. The malfunction caused water to mix with a water-reactive chemical, producing a plume of chemicals. McDaniel said she wasn’t sure what chemicals may have been contained in the plume. BioLab’s website says it is the swimming pool and spa water care division of Lawrenceville, Georgia-based KIK Consumer Products. An automated message at the phone number on the parent company’s website said to call back during business hours. “We are actively responding to an occurrence at our facility in Con

Nice weekend ahead, rain chances return next week

This weekend won’t be a bad one at all for some fall weather activities! Overnight, we’ll cool down nicely to the 50s under dry skies. We’ll have a few clouds around for Saturday. Highs will be cooler than Friday, which was unseasonably warm. Expect highs to reach the upper 60s and low 70s. It’ll be cooler at the coast in the mid 60s. While most of us will stay dry, we can’t rule out a spot sprinkle. Sunday will be even cooler with most of us in the mid to upper 60s. Again, there will be a couple clouds again and we will see some isolated sprinkles. Overall, it’ll be a great weekend for some baseball. Monday will be more of the same. Clouds around with highs in the upper 60s and low 70s, with coastal temperatures cooler in the mid 60s. Tuesday, we’re down to the mid to upper 60s again with a chance for some night showers. That scattered rain chance continues most of Wednesday with cooler highs in the mid 60s. We dry out quickly on Thursday, with the sun expected to shine and

Brockton brothers charged in West Roxbury bank robbery

A pair of brothers from Brockton were arraigned Wednesday after authorities said they concocted and executed a plan to steal cash from the West Roxbury bank where one of them worked as a teller. Boston police and members of the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force responded to Energy Credit Union on Spring Street Tuesday following report or a robbery in progress. Upon arrival, the bank teller, later identified as Jenel Flounoury told authorities he was at work when an unknown male approached his teller window and handed him a note stating “hand it over”. “Jenel Flounoury immediately turned around and entered a closed door containing the main vault,” the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office said in a statement. “Jenel Flounoury opened the top right vault and retrieved all the money in that vault and placed approximately $197,146 in US currency in a blue ATM bag.” Flounoury said the unknown man collected the bag and said “Thank you, sir” before fleeing. (AP) — A man who pleaded guilty as a teenager to the 2001 stabbing deaths of two married Dartmouth College professors is challenging his life-without-parole sentence, saying that the New Hampshire Constitution prohibits it. Robert Tulloch was 17 when he killed Half Zantop and Susanne Zantop in Hanover as part of a conspiracy he and his best friend concocted to rob and kill people before fleeing to Australia with their ill-gotten gains. A hearing was held Wednesday in Grafton County Superior Court to consider legal issues raised in Tulloch’s case. Tulloch, 41, chose not to attend. His attorney, Richard Guerriero, said that a child defendant should have the opportunity to at least be considered for parole. “We’re not asking you to find that you can never sentence a juvenile to life in prison,” Guerriero told Judge Lawrence MacLeod Jr. ”We’re not asking you to find that a person who commits a

Nurses at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital reached a tentative agreement with Massachusetts General Brigham negotiators Thursday to avert a potential one-day strike, the Massachusetts Nurses Association announced.  Five hundred nurses at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner voted by a 99.7% margin in July to authorize a strike. Streak snapped

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. All good things must come to an end, right? Today we ended our run of consecutive days without rain in Boston at 29 days. The last day we had measurable rain was on August 20th when we picked up a whopping 0.01″. Today we ended it with that same whopping 0.01″ (as of 3pm anyway). That’s good enough for 4th place for consecutive days without rain at ANY TIME in the year. One streak we do still have going, though, is driest Septembers. With only 0.01″ for the month (again, as of 3pm) we still have the driest September, to date, on record for Boston. On and off showers will continue overnight and through Friday. It won’t rain all day on Friday, but we’ll have more showers around tomorrow than what we saw today. Like today, the highest likelihood of those showers and the most numerous showers will be for southeast Massachusetts while areas well north and west could squeak through without a drop, or very few drops.

NH woman suffers leg burns after hiking off trail near Yellowstone Park’s Old Faithful

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — A New Hampshire woman suffered burns on her leg after hiking off trail in Yellowstone National Park and falling into scalding water in a thermal area near the Old Faithful geyser, park officials said. The 60-year-old woman from Windsor, New Hampshire, along with her husband and their dog were walking off a designated trail near the Mallard Lake Trailhead on Monday afternoon when she broke through a thin crust over the water and suffered second- and third-degree burns to her lower leg, park officials said. Her husband and the dog were not injured. The woman was flown to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho for treatment. Park visitors are reminded to stay on boardwalks and trails in hydrothermal areas and exercise extreme caution. The ground in those areas is fragile and thin, and there is scalding water just below the surface, park officials said. Pets are allowed in limited, developed areas of Yellowstone park, but are

Shark sighting prompts officials to close Crane Beach in Ipswich

A shark sighting off Crane Beach in Ipswich prompted officials to close the beach to swimming Tuesday.  Ipswich police in a post on Facebook said great white sharks were seen swimming in 5-7 feet of water near the east end of the beach.  The nonprofit Trustees, which manages Crane Beach, first announced the closure at 12 p.m. The Trustees said the beach will remain closed until further notice. SKY7-HD was over the beach near 2 p.m. and spotted several sharks still swimming in the area. The Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game on its website says seasonal great white shark sightings have increased along the Massachusetts coast this year. Though sightings are most common along outer portions of Cape Cod, the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy through its Sharktivity app has documented dozens of additional sightings along the South Shore, Boston Harbor and the North Shore in just the past three months.  The shark conservancy has recorded several sightings near Crane Beach in the

Dry… for now

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. Our dry pattern rolled on for another day. It was a beautiful, summer like day today with bright blue skies in the morning giving way to a filtered sunshine in the afternoon. We’ve added a day to our tally of consecutive dry days, which now has us tied for 5th place for consecutive days without measurable rain at any point in the year! It’s no surprise then that September has seen virtually no rain since we’re 17 days into the month and our dry stretch currently sits at 28 days. As far as record keeping is concerned, Boston has had 0.00″ in September. Now, technically, we’ve seen a few sprinkles at times which is considered a “trace”. A trace, for historical purposes, doesn’t count, which is why the record books will say zero. That’s also why you see two different numbers below on our driest Septembers list versus monthly rain data. We currently have the driest September (to date) on record. That will change t

Devers’ intentional walk from Cole with no runners one on sparks Red Sox over Yankees 7-1

NEW YORK (AP) —  Rafael Devers’ intentional walk by Gerrit Cole  with no one on base sparked a three-run fourth inning, and Devers added a two-run single in Boston’s four-run fifth as the Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 7-1 Saturday. Cole (6-5), the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, hadn’t allowed a hit and led 1-0 when he walked Devers with one out in the fourth. Boston’s only runner until then had been Devers, who was hit by a pitch in the first and erased on a double play. “I felt like the first at-bat he hit him on purpose,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “He doesn’t want to face him. That’s the bottom line. He told us with the intentional walk that the first at-bat he hit him.” After retiring nine of his first 10 batters, Cole allowed 10 of the next 12 to reach base. The 34-year-old right-hander gave up seven runs, his most since June 9, 2022. He hit a career-high three batters and left after 4 1/3 innings. Brayan Bello (14-7) gave up one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings
