Biden is making appeals to donors as concerns persist over his presidential debate performance

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) —  President Joe Biden  is looking to  recapture his mojo  and reassure donors at a Saturday fundraiser that he is fully up to the challenge of beating  Donald Trump . The 81-year-old’s  troubling performance  at the first presidential debate Thursday rattled many Democrats, who see Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection as an  existential threat to U.S. democracy . Biden’s meandering answers and struggles to respond to Trump prompted The New York Times editorial board to declare Friday that he should exit the race and that staying in would be a “reckless gamble.” Biden and his wife, Jill, attended an afternoon campaign event in East Hampton, New York, the Long Island beach town where the real estate firm Zillow prices the median home at $1.9 million. Based on public records, the event that was closed to the news media was at the home of Avram Glazer, an owner of the Tampa Bay Buccanee

Nice Saturday, more severe weather possible Sunday

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. It’s been an amazing Friday so far! And it will continue to stay that way the rest of the day. Evening temperatures will be in the 60s with overnight lows down to the mid to upper 50s. Skies will become partly cloudy overnight, but we don’t have any worries about rain. Tomorrow we’ll see sun and clouds. It’ll be a bit warmer in the mid to upper 70s. While there could be an isolated shower in the late/afternoon and early evening, most of the showers hold off until 10 p.m. through midnight. However, we are much more concerned with storms Sunday afternoon. Right now the timing is between 2-7 p.m., but that may change as we get closer to Sunday. It’ll be very warm in the mid 80s and incredibly humid, both of which can act to strengthen thunderstorms. The greatest storm threats are heavy rain, damaging wind gusts and large hail. Right now, there doesn’t appear to be a tornado risk, but if that changes we’ll let yo

Former prosecutor reacts to developments in Karen Read deliberations

Former federal prosecutor Evan Gotlob on Friday said he would be nervous if he were the prosecutor in the ongoing Karen Read murder trial after jurors were unable to reach a verdict after roughly 17 hours of testimony. Jurors sent a note to Judge Beverly Cannone shortly after 12 p.m. saying their “exhaustive” had not yet yielded a unanimous decision. Cannone told jurors to continue deliberations anyway. But with a lunch break early Friday afternoon, there remained no verdict as of around 2:15 p.m. “Usually, this is either a hung jury or they’re leaning to acquit,” Gotlob told 7NEWS. “It usually doesn’t take this long to convict somebody.” “The longer this goes, if I was in the prosecutor’s chair, I would be a lot more nervous here,” he continued. Read is facing three charges including second degree murder, OUI manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a fatal accident after prosecutors said she hit her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, with her SUV and left him to die ou

Supreme Court allows White House to press social media companies to remove disinformation

(CNN) —  The Supreme Court on Wednesday said the White House and federal agencies such as the FBI  may continue to urge social media platforms to take down content  the government views as misinformation, handing the Biden administration a technical if important election-year victory. Of immediate significance, the decision means that the Department of Homeland Security may continue to flag posts to social media companies such as Facebook and X that it believes may be the work of foreign agents seeking to disrupt this year’s presidential race. Rather than delving into the weighty First Amendment questions raised by the case, the court ruled that the state and social media users who challenged the Biden administration did not have standing to sue. Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote the opinion for a 6-3 majority. “To establish standing, the plaintiffs must demonstrate a substantial risk that, in the near future, they will suffer an injury that is traceable to a government defendant and

Warm Tuesday before storms Wednesday evening

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. We are going to see up and down temperatures the rest of week, and we aren’t in the clear of storms just yet. For the rest of your Monday, evening temperatures will be in the 70s. Overnight lows will drop to the low to mid 60s with partly cloudy skies. We can’t rule out a spot shower. Tuesday will be incredibly bright, warm, yet not humid. Highs will reach the mid to upper 80s, but that should still feel pretty comfortable given dewpoints only in the 50s. Tuesday night will be partly cloudy with lows in the upper 60s and low 70s. Wednesday is when we have our next chance for storms. It’ll be hot, with highs in the upper 80s and low 90s, and it’ll be incredibly humid too. Dewpoints will shoot back into the upper 60s so it’ll feel like the mid 90s. There will be a breeze from the southwest, which is part of the reason why we’ll be so warm. While Wednesday morning will be dry, Wednesday evening and overnight int

(CNN) —  Maryland’s governor issued pardons for more than 175,000 marijuana convictions Monday – a significant act of mass clemency that reflects the rapidly changing attitudes toward a drug that an increasing number of Americans want to see legalized. The pardons by Gov. Wes Moore, a Democrat, will forgive low-level marijuana possession and certain paraphernalia charges for an estimated 100,000 people, the governor’s office said – noting it was possible for a person to have more than one conviction pardoned. The Washington Post  first reported the news. “This is about changing how both government and society view those who have been walled off from opportunity because of broken and uneven policies,” Moore said at a signing event Monday, almost two years after Maryland voters  approved  a constitutional amendment legalizing recreational marijuana for people 21 and older. The governor described his executive order as “the most sweeping state-level pardon” in the country’s history. I

Concrete falls off I-290 overpass in Worcester

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. Crews responded in Worcester Friday after concrete fell off an overpass that carries I-290 over a local road.  Worcester police in a post on X said the concrete fell onto Lincoln Street Friday morning. No one was hurt and there was no property damage, but the fallen concrete prompted traffic delays on the southwest side of Lincoln Street.  Police said traffic was detoured away from the area while crews worked to clean up the concrete.  The road had reopened as of around 12 p.m. Police shared photos of the concrete and the underside of the I-290 overpass, showing a section of newly-exposed rebar on the bridge.  In a statement, a Massachusetts Department of Transportation spokesperson said any additional loose concrete would be removed and shielding would be reinstalled to the section of the bridge where the concrete fell.  The spokesperson said I-290 remained open in both directions and confirmed Lincoln Stre
