Alito tells lawmakers he will not recuse from Supreme Court cases despite flag controversy

(CNN) —  Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito told lawmakers in a letter Wednesday that  he will not recuse from cases involving the 2020 presidential election or the January 6, 2021,  US Capitol riot despite concerns about two controversial flags that have flown on his properties. “The two incidents you cite do not meet the conditions for recusal,” Alito wrote in a letter distributed by the Supreme Court. “As I have stated publicly, I had nothing whatsoever to do with the flying of that flag. I was not even aware of the upside-down flag until it was called to my attention.” The letter is a highly unusual response, underscoring how the revelations about the flags have dogged Alito for days. Supreme Court justices rarely get into a back-and-forth with lawmakers and many members of the court do not explain their reasons for recusing – or not. The Supreme Court is weighing major cases tied to the 2020 election and the attack on the US Capitol. In one, the justices are weighing former Pre

Electric scooter battery blamed for fire that injured five people in Chelsea

A lithium-ion battery from an electric scooter is to blame for a fire in a Chelsea apartment over the weekend that injured five people, state and local officials announced.  The fire happened near 12:40 a.m. Saturday on Carmel Street. In a statement on Wednesday, Chelsea Fire Chief John Quatieri and State Fire Marshal Jon Davine said firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames on the first floor in the rear of the building.  Officials said firefighters entered the building and quickly knocked the fire down before it spread.  Though everyone in the building escaped, officials said, four people were taken to area hospitals. Their injuries were deemed non-life-threatening.  After an investigation, officials said, authorities determined that a battery meant to be used with an electric scooter exploded after it was left charging for several hours.  “The high energy density of lithium-ion batteries means they pack a lot of power into a small device,” said Davine. “Overcharging, overhe

Biden marks Memorial Day with somber speech at Arlington National Cemetery

Washington (CNN) —  President Joe Biden on Monday commemorated Memorial Day during remarks at Arlington National Cemetery, where he marked the solemn and personal occasion by thanking those killed while serving their country in the name democracy of around the world. “Freedom has never been guaranteed – every generation has to earn it, fight for it, defend it in battle between autocracy and democracy, between the greed of a few and the rights of many. It matters, our democracy is more than just a system of government. It’s the very soul of America,” Biden told the crowd gathered for his annual Memorial Day Address. The president took the opportunity to honor those killed while serving their country and also thanked veterans, survivors and family members in the audience on Memorial Day. “We gather at this sacred place, at this solemn moment, to remember, to honor –honor the sacrifice of the hundreds of thousands of women and men who have given their lives to this nation,” he said. “E

Spotty showers before evening downpours for Memorial Day

For the rest of your Sunday, we cannot rule out isolated showers and thunderstorms during the evening hours. Overnight, it’s more of a risk for an isolated sprinkle or light shower. Overnight lows will drop to the mid to the upper 50s. Tomorrow, during the morning, there may be some isolated sprinkles around the very cloudy skies. In the afternoon, that escalates to an isolated shower or downpour, and in the evening that chance skyrockets into likely downpours and thunderstorms. Generally, most of us will pick up a quick 1-2 inches from those storms. Thankfully, the greatest severe weather risk is to our southwest, but I don’t want to rule an isolated stronger storm Monday night. Apart from not being a good beach day due to the clouds, spotty showers during the day, and downpours later, high temperatures won’t be warm at all. Highs inland will reach the upper 60s and low 70s, while coastal temperatures will only reach the mid to upper 60s. from Boston News, Weather, Sports

Families of Uvalde school shooting victims sue Texas state police over botched response

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The families of 19 of the victims in the  Uvalde elementary school shooting  in Texas on Wednesday announced a lawsuit against nearly 100 state police officers who were part of the botched law enforcement response. The families said in a statement that they also agreed a $2 million settlement with the city, under which city leaders promised higher standards and better training for local police. The announcement came two days before the two-year anniversary of one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. Nineteen fourth-graders and two teachers were killed on May 24, 2022, when a teenage gunman burst into their classroom at Robb Elementary School and began shooting. The lawsuit is the latest of several seeking accountability for the law enforcement response. More than 370 federal, state and local officers converged on the scene, but they waited more than 70 minutes before confronting the shooter. It is the first lawsuit to come after  a 600-page Justic

Massachusetts man seriously injured in grizzly bear attack in Grand Teton National Park

A grizzly bear attack in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming left a 35-year-old Massachusetts man with serious injuries over the weekend, the National Park Service announced.  The attack happened on Sunday, according to the park service. By Tuesday, officials said, the injured man was in stable condition and expected to fully recover.  The National Park Service said the man was visiting Grand Teton National Park and was in the area of Signal Mountain Summit Road at the time of the attack.  Citing initial reports from the man and preliminary information from an investigation at the site of the attack, officials said investigators believe the attack “was a surprise encounter with two grizzly bears.” Officials said one of the bears made contact with the man and injured him.  The National Park Service on its website describes Signal Mountain Summit Road as a five-mile “narrow, winding road” that climbs toward panoramic views of nearby mountains.   “[B]e aware of wildlife on or near

Hotter Wednesday, risk of storms Thursday

For the rest of your Tuesday, get out and enjoy the beautiful weather! Most of us will reach the 80s except for the Cape and elsewhere in southeastern Massachusetts with highs there only in the 60s and 70s. We can’t rule out an isolated shower or downpour in southern New Hampshire or near the NH/MA state line. Most of us won’t see that, and instead will stick with the bright skies. Overnight lows will drop to the upper 50s and low 60s with partly cloudy skies. Tomorrow will be sunny all day and very warm for this time of year. Most of us will reach the mid to upper 80s, again with a few exclusions off to the southeast. It will feel a bit sticky, too, with dew points jumping into the low 60s. Heads up for Thursday: more heat, humidity will fuel a risk for showers and thunderstorms with an isolated chance for strong to severe storms. That’s most likely in the afternoon hours, but we’ll be able to get more details on timing as we get through tomorrow. Right now, NOAA’s Storm Predi

Boston officials lay out plan to reduce violence, protect children during summer months

As warm weather set in, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu gathered with other municipal officials Tuesday to lay out a plan to reduce violence and protect children in the city this summer.  Dubbed the 2024 Summer Safety Plan and released online, officials in a statement said the plan “will serve as the foundation for the City’s ongoing, year-round efforts to address the root causes of violence through a public health lens.” Officials said the plan also aims to “create the conditions for community healing.” “Our goal is for every kid in Boston to know that they are seen, that they are loved and treasured,” Wu said.  As part of the plan, Wu’s Community Safety Team is focusing on goals including adding more community and youth activities, increasing positive police presence and making sure Boston’s gun violence intervention strategy is active.  Boston police have said shooting incidents are down 44% compared to last year.  Still, a city task force on reducing gun violence is ramping up meeti
