Security guard fatally shot at New Hampshire hospital remembered for dedication to community, family

TILTON, N.H. (AP) — A security guard who was shot to death at New Hampshire Hospital is being remembered for his dedication to his community and family. Law enforcement from multiple departments joined state officials and family members on Monday for a celebration of life service for Bradley Haas, 63, who died following  the shooting on Nov. 17.  A police escort brought his remains through the city of Franklin, where he grew up and served as police chief, on its way to Winnisquam High School in Tilton,  WMUR-TV reported . “Behind every badge is a person, and in our law enforcement community, there are a lot of genuinely good people, and Brad was one of them,” said Stephen Houten, an Army veteran and former Sanbornton police officer. Haas, also an Army veteran, served with the Franklin Police Department for 28 years before retiring in 2008. He then became a security guard at the psychiatric hospital in Concord. “He was known as a quiet professional, and I knew him that way,” said Ne

Wolverines receive protection under Endangered Species Act as climate change threatens their habitat

(CNN) —  The North American wolverine has officially been listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act and will receive long-anticipated federal protections, US  officials announced  Wednesday, as the climate crisis melts away their snowy mountain habitats. The US Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision to list the wolverines as threatened   in the contiguous US comes as scientists warn that warming temperatures are rapidly diminishing the mountain snowpack that the species rely on for food, reproduction and ultimate survival. “Current and increasing impacts of climate change and associated habitat degradation and fragmentation are imperiling the North American wolverine,”   Fish and Wildlife Service   Pacific Regional Director Hugh Morrison said in a statement. “Based on the best available science, this listing determination will help to stem the long-term impact and enhance the viability of wolverines in the contiguous United States.” Adding wolverines to the list triggers l

Maine offers free university tuition to Lewiston shooting victims, families

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine’s public university system is offering free tuition to family members of those who died and to those who were injured in the deadliest mass shooting in state history, officials said Wednesday. The Oct. 25 shootings  left 18 people dead  after a gunman opened fire at a bowling alley and a restaurant. The program was announced by Gov. Janet Mills, University of Maine System Chancellor Dannel Malloy and trustees. It expanded on a call from Mills to create a scholarship fund for people affected by the shootings. “Through their boundless generosity, Maine people are demonstrating that our state will stand by those who were injured and the families of those who were killed in the months, years and decades to come,” said Mills, a Democrat. The people covered by the program include

Now is not a time for indecision or milquetoast statements.” According to the House committee, the hearing will i

Mystery homicide victim identified after 4 decades

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday that they had determined the identity of an individual whose remains had been unidentified since they were found in Fairhaven in 1985. Using a genetic profile developed from DNA recovered from the remains, investigators were able to use forensic genetic genealogy to identify the victim as Keith Olsen, of Cranston, RI. Olsen was reported missing shortly after he was last seen on April 15, 1981. He was 27 at the time of his disappearance. Four years after his disappearance, on April 8, 1985, skeletal remains of a male were found by a driver stopped in the westbound breakdown lane of I-195 in Fairhaven, just past the Mattapoisett town line. Investigators at the time located nothing that could help them identify the skeleton, which showed evidence of inflicted trauma; the cause of death was determined to be a homicide. Investigators believe New York man and his wife were killed in vehicle that exploded at US-Canada bridge, sources say. Here’s what we know

(CNN) —  Investigators believe a New York man and his wife were the two people killed in a car that   crashed and exploded  at a US-Canada border crossing near Niagara Falls on Wednesday, law enforcement sources say, and the FBI sees no link to terrorism. Alarms were raised from New York to Washington, DC, late Wednesday morning after the incident on the US side of the Rainbow Bridge crossing. Investigators believe the couple was traveling in a Bentley at high speed when it struck a curb at the checkpoint, then hit a guardrail that sent the vehicle airborne and into a screening area before it exploded, according to the sources. Despite initial concerns of a terror attack, the FBI has not found any connection to terrorism and no explosives were found at the scene, the agency’s Buffalo field office  announced  Wednesday night. The case is being turned over to local police as a traffic investigation. “I want to be very, very clear to Americans and New Yorkers: At this time there is no

Man who fatally shot security guard at psychiatric hospital was banned from having guns, records say

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A man who fatally shot a security guard at a New Hampshire psychiatric hospital moments before being killed by a state police trooper was not allowed to have guns, ammunition, or any other dangerous weapons following an arrest in 2016, according to court records. At that time, police seized an assault-style rifle and 9 mm handgun from John Madore, 33. Madore, who was arrested in Strafford on assault and reckless conduct charges, was later involuntarily admitted at New Hampshire Hospital in Concord, according to records. The charges were dismissed in 2017 following a competency evaluation that remains sealed. The weapons ban against Madore was part of bail orders unsealed by a judge Wednesday  following a request  by the New Hampshire Bulletin. On Nov. 17, Madore had a 9 mm pistol and ammunition when  he shot and killed  Bradley Haas, a state Department of Safety security officer who was working at the hospital’s front lobby entrance, the state attorney general’s
