Largest study of brains of athletes younger than 30 finds early signs of CTE even in amateur players

(CNN) —  A new study from Boston University’s CTE Center has discovered more than 60 cases of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, known as CTE, in athletes who were under the age of 30 at the time of their death. This is the largest study to look at the neurodegenerative disease in young people. Researchers found about 40% of the brains studied had developed some of the earliest signs of the disease, which is associated with repeated head trauma. The study also includes what researchers believe to be the first case of an American female athlete diagnosed with the disease. The report, published in  JAMA Neurology  on Monday, describes the features of 152 brains donated between February 1, 2008, and September 31, 2022, to the UNITE brain bank — the largest tissue repository in the world focused on traumatic brain injury and CTE. Sixty-three out of the 152 donated brains (41%) had autopsy-confirmed CTE. The disease can only be formally diagnosed with an autopsy and has been associated w

Mookie Betts caps Boston return with another homer as Dodgers beat Red Sox 7-4

BOSTON (AP) — Mookie Betts looked up at the reporters gathering around his locker in the visitor’s clubhouse at Fenway Park and asked: “Didn’t anybody else play good?” Yes, Mookie. A lot of your Dodgers teammates did. But baseball fans — especially those in Boston — still want to hear from you. The 2018 AL MVP — who is among the favorites for the NL award this season — capped his return to Boston with a second straight three-hit game, connecting for a two-run homer to spark Los Angeles to a 7-4 victory over his former team on Sunday. “Obviously, the emotions were there,” said Betts, who won a World Series with the Red Sox in 2018 and another in Los Angeles after he was traded there that spring in a salary dump. “I let them come. But I also let them go.” Freddie Freeman also had three hits, and James Outman homered to help the Dodgers improve to 21-4 in August. Gavin Stone (1-0) earned his first career victory, following opener Caleb Ferguson to the mound and holding Boston to two r

Sheriff provides the first details of how a white man fatally shot 3 Black people at a Florida store

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A 21-year-old white man fatally shot three Black people in Florida with guns he bought legally despite once being involuntarily committed for a mental health exam, the local sheriff said Sunday. Ryan Palmeter shot one of his victims as she sat in her car outside a Jacksonville store; shot another just after Palmeter entered the store; and shot the third minutes later, Jacksonville’s sheriff said. Palmeter used an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and a Glock handgun in the shooting, Sheriff T.K. Waters said during a press conference. Palmeter had legally purchased his guns in recent months even though he had been involuntarily committed for a mental health examination in 2017. Palmeter killed himself after killing the three victims. Waters identified those shot in Saturday’s attack at a Dollar General as Angela Michelle Carr, 52, who was shot in her car; store employee A.J. Laguerre, 19, who was shot as he tried to flee; and customer Jerrald Gallion, 29, who was

‘Dune: Part Two’ delayed to 2024 as Hollywood strikes drag on

(CNN) —  “ Dune: Part Two ,” the long-awaited sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic “Dune” from 2021, has been delayed, Warner Bros. announced on Thursday. The film, starring Timothée Chalamet and  Zendaya , was originally slated for release on November 3rd of this year. In an email to CNN on Thursday, the studio confirmed the sequel was being pushed “due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.” (Warner Bros. and CNN are both a part of Warner Bros. Discovery.) Actors in that union, the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists,  have been on strike  since July after negotiations with the studios and streaming platforms around a new contract failed.
