Hot car deaths can be prevented with this new technology

(CNN) —  One hot June day in Louisiana, Tyler Cestia was supposed to drop his son off at a babysitter before continuing on to work. His two-year-old boy, Thomas, asked to ride in the “big boy seat,” the child safety seat his older brother usually rode in, the one right behind the driver’s seat. Once he was buckled in, it was nearly impossible to see him from the driver’s seat, and he didn’t make a sound. “He was pretty quiet whenever we’d ride,” Tyler Cestia said. “I keep it in my mind that he was asleep.” Cestia, a manager at a welding company, had a big financial audit coming up at work that day, and he had a safety presentation to give in the morning. With Thomas silent and not visible ,  the stop at the babysitter just slipped his mind. The outside temperature peaked at almost 90 degrees that day. Temperatures inside of Cestia’s parked GMC Sierra pickup would have been well over 100 degrees. Thomas died strapped into his safety seat, as his small body was simply overcome by the

Mans death while awaiting trial on charges he killed his mother at sea was not suspicious autopsy says

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — An autopsy has determined that the death of a man awaiting trial on charges of  killing his mother  off the coast of New England in a scheme to inherit millions of dollars was not suspicious, the New Hampshire attorney general’s office said Wednesday. Nathan Carman, 29, of Vernon, Vermont, was found  dead in his cell  in a county jail in New Hampshire on June 15. The attorney general’s office does not release the cause and manner in deaths that are not suspicious, according to spokesperson Michael Garrity. The U.S. Marshals Service in Vermont said it will not be releasing the cause of Carman’s death at the request of family. The attorney general’s office confirmed that authorities consider a death to be not suspicious when they’ve determined no one else was involved, or if no crime was committed. Carman pleaded not guilty  last year  to fraud and first-degree murder in the death of his mother, Linda Carman, in 2016, and was scheduled to go on trial in October.

Costco is cracking down on sharing membership cards

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. New York (CNN) —  Some shoppers are buying Costco’s  $4.99 rotisserie chickens  and paying at self-checkout. The problem: They aren’t all members. Since Costco has expanded self-checkout, the company has noticed that non-members have been sneaking in to use membership cards that don’t belong to them. The warehouse club retailer will now ask for shoppers’ membership cards along with a photo ID to use the self-checkout registers – the same policy as regular checkout lanes. “We don’t feel it’s right that nonmembers receive the same benefits and pricing as our members,” Costco said in a statement. Costco had around 66 million paid members and 119 million cardholders in 2022, making it one of the largest membership clubs in the world. Costco members pay either $60 for a regular membership or $120 for an executive card every year to shop at clubs. The company has not raised the cost of its membership since 2017, desp

Biden says Putin has absolutely been weakened after revolt in Russia

(CNN) —  President Joe Biden told CNN on Wednesday  his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin  has “absolutely” been weakened by the  short-lived mutiny over the weekend. It was his most definitive comment to date on how the rebellion by Wagner Group boss Yevgeny Prigozhin affected the Russian leader’s stature. Biden and his team have been cautious in  commenting on the events , wary of providing Putin pretext for claiming a western plot to oust him. But on Wednesday, Biden expanded on his views of Putin’s diminished stature. Asked whether the Russian president had been weakened, Biden said: “Absolutely.” Later, expanding on the extent of Putin’s weakness, Biden said it was difficult to ascertain. “It’s hard to tell but he’s clearly losing the war,” Biden told reporters on the White House South Lawn, mistakenly referring to the war in Iraq instead of Ukraine. “He’s losing the war at home. He’s become a bit of a pariah around the world. And it’s not just NATO, it’s not just the Europ

US military launches official investigation of disputed drone strike that reportedly killed civilian

(CNN) —  An official investigation has been launched by US Central Command into the May 3 drone strike in Syria that reportedly killed a civilian instead of the intended senior al-Qaeda target. A statement from CENTCOM on Wednesday said that the civilian casualty credibility assessment recently completed has become an official 15-6 investigation. CNN  reported earlier this month  that CENTCOM was preparing to launch the formal investigation. “The civilian casualty credibility assessment process has become an AR 15-6 investigation,” the CENTCOM statement on Wednesday said. “Maj. Gen. Matthew McFarlane, commander of [Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve], appointed a general officer as the investigating officer, effective June 23, 2023.” The investigation comes eight weeks after the drone strike which was targeting a senior al-Qaeda leader. Despite confidence from senior CENTCOM officials in the aftermath of the strike that they had killed an al-Qaeda leader, family me

Part of ceiling crumbles at Downtown Crossing T station

Commuters recently noted more trouble for the MBTA in the form of debris crumbling from the ceiling at the Downtown Crossing station. Just the latest issue for the transit system, the issue prompted reactions from riders and the T.  “I mean, I guess I’m not surprised to see that,” one rider said on Tuesday.  A visitor to Boston from Baltimore tweeted at the T on Monday night saying he and other passengers were standing nearby when debris fell at Downtown Crossing. The visitor continued, urging inspectors to safeguard the public.  “You don’t want it to be scary to ride the T,” said Cynthia Peters, a concerned MBTA passenger. “And when you see something like this where a ceiling just collapsed — somebody could have been standing there, somebody could have been looking at the map trying to figure out where to go and a big piece of debris could have fallen on them.” A day after Monday’s incident, on Tuesday, a 7NEWS camera captured more signs of decay inside the Downtown Crossing stat

Judge denies Sam Bankman-Frieds motion to dismiss charges

New York (CNN) —  A federal judge on Tuesday denied  efforts by Sam Bankman-Fried , the crypto entrepreneur accused of orchestrating a multibillion-dollar fraud, to have some of his criminal charges thrown out. Judge Lewis Kaplan of the Southern District of New York said in an opinion that the defense’s arguments “are either moot or without merit,” setting the stage for Bankman-Fried  to stand trial  on 13 federal counts in October. Bankman-Fried’s lawyers declined to comment. Bankman-Fried, who is 31, has  pleaded not guilty  to all 13 charges, including wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. If convicted on all counts, he could face life in prison. Federal prosecutors allege that Bankman-Fried orchestrated one of the biggest financial frauds in US history. They say he cheated investors and stole money from customers of his cryptocurrency exchange, FTX, to make lavish real estate purchases and large political campaign donations. Taco Johns responds to Taco Bells Taco Tuesday lawsuit

New York (CNN) —  The  fight for the “Taco Tuesday”  trademark is getting spicy. Taco John’s, a regional chain, has responded to Taco Bell’s effort to liberate the phrase so that anyone can use it. In a  filing  Friday, responding to Taco Bell’s petition to “cancel” the trademark, Taco John’s parent company Spicy Seasonings denied there is “anything ‘not cool’ about” obtaining a trademark for the phrase. The Wyoming-based company said Taco Bell’s lawsuit is filled with “statements of opinion to which no response is required, including that Tuesday is a mediocre day of the week.” Last month,  Taco Bell filed a petition  with the US Patent and Trademark office to cancel the trademark owned by rival Taco John’s for 34 years because Taco Bell claims the commonly used phrase “should be freely available to all who make, sell, eat and celebrate tacos.” Since Taco John’s holds the trademark, other restaurants and companies must seek permission to use “Taco Tuesday” in branding and advertisi

Supreme Court lets lawsuits over team doctors sexual abuse proceed against Ohio State

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday left in place a decision that allows more than 230 men to sue Ohio State University over decades-old sexual abuse by a university doctor, the late Richard Strauss. Two cases involving the abuse were on a list of many cases the court said it would not hear. And, as is typical, the court did not comment in saying it would not hear the cases. Ohio State University had urged the court to review a  ruling by the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals  that revived lawsuits that had been dismissed. The men who sued are among hundreds of former student-athletes and other  alumni who say they were abused  by Strauss, who worked at the school from 1978 to 1998. They say university officials failed to stop him despite complaints raised as early as the late 1970s. Many of them allege Strauss abused them during required physicals and other medical exams at campus athletic facilitie

He’s hitting fastballs. He’s not chasing as much. He’s a really damn good player. And he’s still 25 years old.
