Two Amur leopard cubs born at Pittsburgh Zoo

(CNN) — The Pittsburgh Zoo has welcomed two adorable — and critically endangered — new bundles of joy. The zoo announced the birth of two delightful Amur leopard cubs in  a Thursday news release. The babies were born March 18 to first-time mother Semba, according to the release. The cubs are still unnamed and are out of public view, the zoo explained. “Semba was born at the Pittsburgh Zoo herself and we’re so glad to see the next generation join us. She’s such a good mom,” said Karen Vacco, the zoo’s assistant curator of mammals, in the release. “Aside from digital monitoring of the denning area, we’re letting them bond. They’re doing well, the babies are nursing and growing just like they should.” Amur leopards are “one of the rarest subspecies of cats on earth,” according to the news release. There are around 100 of the felines left in the wild in Russia and China, where they make their homes in temperate forests. The Amur leopard population has been devastated due to poaching,

Wrongfully convicted Kansas man to get $7.5 million payment

OSKALOOSA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man who spent 16 years in prison for a rape and murder he didn’t commit will receive $7.5 million from the county where he was arrested and convicted of the crime. Jefferson County commissioners approved the settlement last week with Floyd Bledsoe, who was released from prison in 2015 after DNA evidence showed he could not have been the killer of 14-year-old Camille Arfmann in Oskaloosa. Bledsoe will receive $1.5 million initially, with the rest to be paid over the next 10 years, The Kansas City Star  reported . Bledsoe, who is now 46, was 23 when he was convicted in 2000 of killing the girl. He was arrested even though his brother, Tom, confessed to the killing in 1999, turned himself in and led authorities to the girl’s body. According to  a lawsuit  Floyd Bledsoe filed in 2016, Jefferson County authorities persuaded Tom Bledsoe to recant his confession and “framed” his brother by hiding evidence of his innocence. In 2015, DNA testing revealed Tom

Jayson Tatum apologizes to Janet Jackson for concert delay as Boston Celtics win Game 6 to eliminate Atlanta Hawks

(CNN) —  Any Time, Any Place  — just not in Atlanta on Thursday. Boston star Jayson Tatum apologized to  Janet Jackson  after the Celtics’ 128-120 Game 6 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Jackson had been  scheduled to perform a concert  at the Hawks’ State Farm Arena on Thursday, but — in a turn of events that would make Janet fans  Scream  — a shock victory over the Celtics in Boston on Tuesday meant the series returned to Atlanta and the concert had to be postponed until Friday. “I wanna send an apology to the legend Janet Jackson,” Tatum told TNT after the game. “We were supposed to close it out in Boston. She had to postpone her show. “I hope she sees this, you know, I apologize for that, but we got it done today.” Tatum certainly got it done, registering 30 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and a steal to help close out a 4-2 series win and set up a Eastern Conference semifinal clash against  NBA MVP candidate Joel Embiid  and the Philadelphia 76ers. Jayson Tatu

Accused Pentagon leaker’s violent rhetoric raises fresh questions about top secret vetting process

(CNN) —  New details  about the 21-year-old Air National Guardsman accused of  leaking a trove  of classified documents online reveal how multiple red flags went unheeded and weren’t enough to prevent the Pentagon from granting him a top-secret security clearance. Officials across the government are now scrambling to figure out why. The US government has spent years and vast sums of money overhauling the way it vets and monitors people with access to government secrets. But that didn’t stop the Pentagon from granting a top-secret security clearance to Jack Teixeira, who prosecutors say had an arsenal of weapons at home and a history of violent online rhetoric. Teixeira had to fill out an extensive questionnaire known as E-QIP (Electronic Questionnaires for Investigations Processing) and be vetted by the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency before being granted his clearance in 2021, officials told CNN. But according to  court documents filed  by prosecutors on Wednesday,

Maine highway shooting victims healing, grateful, confused

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The father of two of the victims of a deadly shooting rampage in Maine said Friday he and his children are recovering from their injuries and grateful for the support they’ve received from the community. The family is also still baffled why such violence befell them while they were driving down the highway. A 34-year-old man confessed last week to injuring three people while shooting at vehicles on Interstate 295 in Yarmouth and four killings at a home in Bowdoin, police have said. Soon after the discovery of the bodies in Bowdoin, police responded to gunshots fired at several vehicles more than 20 miles (about 32 kilometers) to the south on a busy highway in Yarmouth. Bullets struck a family in one of the vehicles, wounding Sean Halsey, 51, and his children Justin Halsey, 29, and Paige Halsey, 25, police said. The shootings left Paige Halsey in critical condition for several days, and she

Jerry Springer’s cause of death revealed

(CNN) — Longtime television host and former mayor of Cincinnati Jerry Springer died from pancreatic cancer, his longtime representative Linda Shafran confirmed to CNN Friday. He was 79. Springer’s death had been announced Thursday. “Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word,” Jene Galvin, a lifelong friend and spokesman for the family, said in a statement. His tabloid talk series, “The Jerry Springer Show,” premiered in 1991 and was wildly successful in syndication. It ended in 2018 after more than 4,000 episodes. Both Springer and his show were often criticized for helping to popularize “trash TV” due to the often outrageous guests he hosted. Springer once told CNN that he did not mind being referred to as the “grandfather of trash TV,”  saying in 2010 , as “The Jerry Springer Show” celebrated its 20th anniversary on th

Surviving roommate in Idaho murders agrees to speak to suspect’s attorneys

(CNN) — One of the surviving roommates in a stabbing attack that left four University of Idaho students dead has agreed to speak to defense attorneys for suspect  Bryan Kohberger  after initially resisting efforts by his legal team to compel her testimony. In a court filing made Wednesday, obtained by CNN affiliate KRNV, an attorney for Bethany Funke agreed to make Funke available for an interview with defense attorneys in Reno, Nevada, in place of appearing at a preliminary hearing scheduled for late June in Idaho. Previously,  Kohberger’s legal team  had asked a Nevada court to compel Funke to travel to Idaho and testify as a witness, arguing her testimony would be exculpatory and her “information is unique to her experiences and cannot be provided by another witness.” Funke, who returned to her hometown of Reno following the killings last November, had fought the subpoena. Her attorney, Kelli Anne Viloria, filed a motion to quash it, arguing “there is no further information or de

EPA: Machine gun range could harm Cape Cod drinking water

BOSTON (AP) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued a draft determination Thursday that a proposed machine gun training range at a National Guard base could pose a threat to Cape Cod’s drinking water, potentially creating a public health hazard for more than 220,000 year-round residents. There are no reasonably available alternative drinking water sources for residents should the Cape Cod aquifer become contaminated, the agency said. “We have studied the proposed machine gun range very carefully because EPA recognizes the need for our armed forces to maintain readiness and provide training to service members,” EPA Regional Administrator David Cash said in a written statement. “However, the risk of irreparable damage to the only drinking water source on Cape Cod is too significant,” he added. The agency said it will accept public comment on  the proposed machine gun range  through June 26, and will hold a public hearing on May 24. The Massachusetts Army National Guard has

Disney sues DeSantis and oversight board after vote to nullify agreement with special taxing district

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. (CNN) — Walt Disney Parks and Resorts on Wednesday sued Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and his hand-picked oversight board, accusing the Republican 2024 presidential prospect of weaponizing his political power to punish the company for exercising its free speech rights. The lawsuit was filed in federal court minutes after the board appointed by  DeSantis  to oversee Disney’s special taxing district sought to claw back its power from the entertainment giant, voting to invalidate  an agreement  struck between Disney and the previous board in February, just before that board’s dissolution. “What they created is an absolute legal mess, OK? It will not work,” said Martin Garcia, chairman of the DeSantis-picked Central Florida Tourism Oversight District  board of supervisors . Scratch Tix Push Lottery’s March Sales Past Half A Billion

Instant ticket sales surged well into the black in March, further buoying the Lottery’s financial performance three-quarters of the way through the fiscal year. The Lottery sold $366.4 million in instant tickets last month, about $57.5 million more than in March 2022, Interim Executive Director Mark William Bracken told the Lottery Commission on Tuesday. He called it a “very strong increase.” That burst helped fuel total sales of $519 million in March and represented the majority of Lottery growth over the same stretch a year earlier. All other games besides Mega Millions and Lucky for Life saw decreased sales in March compared to March 2022. Instant tickets are the most popular Lottery product and typically make up 65 to 70 percent of all sales. For much of fiscal year 2023, instant tickets have sold more slowly than last year, but March’s performance pushed the year-to-date instant ticket haul to $51.3 million, or 1.7 percent more than the same stretch in FY22. Elusive type of black hole has a messy star-snacking habit

(CNN) — Black holes have a reputation for snacking on stars, but some of these celestial garbage disposals may be messier than others, according to new research. Astrophysicists used  3D computer models  to show that intermediate-mass black holes take a few bites out of wayward stars before tossing away the stellar crumbs and leaving a cosmic trail. Researchers made the discovery while running simulations on black holes of various masses and sending sun-size stars past them. The clues uncovered in the experiment might help astronomers find intermediate-mass black holes by searching for evidence of their behaviors. During the simulations, the intermediate-mass black hole   snagged the star in its orbit, and each time the star made another lap, the black hole took another bite out of it. When only the dense, misshapen core of the star was left, the black hole discarded it and sent it flying across the galaxy. A study describing the modeling analysis has been accepted for publication
