FBI documents: Las Vegas mass shooter lost tens of thousands of dollars gambling, was mad about how casinos had treated him

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The high-roller gambler who  opened fire on concertgoers on the Las Vegas Strip  had lost tens of thousands of dollars while gambling weeks before the mass shooting and was upset about how the casinos had treated him, according to FBI documents made public this week. The documents reveal the strongest indication of a motive for the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. They paint a detailed account of  gunman Stephen Paddock’s  final days before the Oct. 1, 2017, mass shooting that  killed 60 people  and injured hundreds more. A gambler whose name is redacted from the hundreds of pages of documents told the FBI that Paddock “was very upset at the way casinos were treating him and other high rollers.” Neither the FBI nor the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the lead investigating agency, presented an official motive for the shooting. Both agencies have said Paddock acted alone. The  10-minute massacre  unfolded on the final night of the three-

New NHLPA head Walsh quickly figuring out player priorities

Marty Walsh is still fresh in his new job as head of the NHL Players’ Association  and trying to learn what members of the union want. It didn’t take long to figure out a couple of priorities. The former U.S. Secretary of Labor  and Mayor of Boston knows players want to get back on the ice for a major international tournament and that they do not want to pay any more money into escrow. With talks ongoing to hold another World Cup of Hockey and a discussion on significantly raising the salary cap upcoming, Walsh has a clear starting point long before collective bargaining talks resume in a couple of years. “When I get asked the question about whether I’d be interested in seeing the cap go up, my answer is yes, and my follow-up to that was that the players are not interested in raising the escrow right now,” Walsh said at his introductory news conference Thursday, in which topics ranged from finances and relationships to player participation in Pride night warmups and international co

Congress to consider new no-fly list for unruly passengers

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Senate and House members proposed a new no-fly list for unruly passengers on Wednesday, an idea that was pushed by airline unions but failed to gain traction last year. The legislation would let the Transportation Security Administration ban people convicted or fined for assaulting or interfering with airline crew members. It would be separate from the current FBI-run no-fly list, which is intended to prevent people suspected of terrorism ties from boarding planes. The number of  incidents involving unruly passengers  dropped sharply last year after a judge struck down a federal requirement to wear masks on planes. However, incidents serious enough to be investigated by federal officials remained more than five times higher than before the pandemic. “The violent incidents have not stopped,” Cher Taylor, a Frontier Airlines flight attendant who said she witnessed a passenger attack another

Pet cats and dogs may help protect infants from food allergies, study suggests

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. (CNN) — Children who live with cats or dogs during fetal development and early infancy may be less likely than other kids to develop food allergies, according to a  new study . The study, published Wednesday in the journal PLOS One, analyzed data from over 65,000 children from Japan. It found that children exposed to cats or indoor dogs had a 13% to 16% lower risk of all food allergies compared with babies in pet-free homes. “Our findings suggest that exposure to dogs and cats might be beneficial against the development of certain food allergies, thereby alleviating concerns about pet keeping and reducing the burden of food allergies,” the authors wrote. The study found that children exposed to cats were less likely to develop egg, wheat and soybean allergies, while those exposed to dogs were less likely to have egg, milk and nut allergies. Registered nurse vacancy rates in Massachusetts hospitals doubled from 6.4 percent in 2019 to 13.6 percent in 2022, with especially high vacancy rates in community hospitals,  the HPC report says.   When COVID-19 arrived in 2020, hospitals turned to traveling health care workers to fill workforce gaps at facilities around the country that were overwhelmed. As of 2021, these contracted workers represented about 5 percent of hospital patient care labor costs, the report says. Court rules in favor of victim’s family in ‘Serial’ case

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A Maryland court did not give the family of the murder victim in the case chronicled in the hit podcast “Serial” enough time to attend a court hearing in person that led to Adnan Syed’s release, a Maryland appellate court ruled Tuesday, and it ordered a new hearing to be held. Though Syed’s conviction has been reinstated, he will not be taken back into custody. In a 2-1 decision, the Appellate Court of Maryland ruled the state’s law provides victims with the right to prior notice of the hearing on a motion to vacate convictions, and that right was violated in the case of the family of Hae Min Lee, Syed’s ex-girlfriend and high school classmate who died more than two decades ago. The court ruled that giving her brother, Young Lee, only one business day before the hearing was “insufficient time to reasonably allow Mr. Lee, who lived in California, to attend the hearing in person,” and required him to attend the hearing remotely. “Allowing a victim entitled to at

Boy Scouts’ $2.4 billion bankruptcy plan upheld by judge

DOVER, Del. (AP) — A federal district court judge has upheld the approval of a $2.4 billion bankruptcy reorganization plan aimed at resolving tens of thousands of child sexual abuse claims against the Boy Scouts of America. The ruling docketed Tuesday rejects arguments by non-settling insurance companies and attorneys representing dissenting abuse survivors that the reorganization plan was not proposed in good faith and improperly strips the insurers and survivors of their rights. The ruling follows a September decision in which U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Laurie Selber Silverstein approved the plan. The plan would allow the Irving, Texas-based Boy Scouts of America to continue operating while compensating tens of thousands of men who say they were sexually abused as children while involved in Scouting. More than 80,000 men have filed claims saying they were abused as children by troop leaders around the country. Plan opponents say the staggering number of claims, when combined with other

Scratch Ticket Rebound Lifts Lottery

Sales at the Massachusetts Lottery were up more than 20 percent in February, due in large part to a sizable bump in sales of a key product that Lottery officials have been concerned about in the last year. The Lottery sold $513.3 million worth of its products last month, an increase of $88.5 million or 20.8 percent over February 2022. Scratch tickets accounted for about 71 percent of February sales, or $363.8 million, up $82.3 million or just more than 29 percent, according to a report that Interim Executive Director Mark William Bracken planned to give Tuesday morning at a meeting of the Lottery Commission. The month’s sales combined with a $23.9 million decrease in scratch ticket grand prizes paid out during the month to help the Lottery turn a monthly profit of $94.3 million, $23.5 million more than in February 2022. The Lottery also paid out a smaller percentage of its revenue in prizes last month, 74.72 percent compared to 76.26 percent in February 2022. Treasurer Deborah Gol

Scientists create mice from two dads after making eggs from skin cells

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. (CNN) — Scientists have created mice with two biologically male parents for the first time — a significant milestone in reproductive biology. The team, led by Katsuhiko Hayashi, a professor of genome biology at Osaka University in Japan, generated eggs from the skin cells of male mice that, when implanted in female mice, went on to produce healthy pups, according to research published March 15 in the  peer-reviewed journal Nature . The proof-of-concept research, the culmination of years of pain-staking lab work, could expand the possibilities for future fertility treatments, including for same-sex couples, and perhaps help prevent the extinction of endangered animals. However, scientists warn there’s still much to learn before cultured cells can be used to make human eggs in a lab dish. “It is expected that application into humans takes a long time, maybe 10 years or more. Even if it is applied, we never know w

Report: No turbulence during fatal business jet flight

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Investigators said Friday that a passenger on a business jet was fatally injured in early March when the aircraft violently bucked up and down after pilots disconnected a system used to stabilize the plane. The National Transportation Safety Board said the pilots were responding to several warnings in the cockpit of the Bombardier jet  that diverted to a Connecticut airport  on March 3. They followed a checklist and turned off a switch that “trims” or adjusts the stabilizer, a control panel on the plane’s tail. The plane turned nose-up at several times the force of gravity, then pointed lower before again turning upward before pilots could regain control, the report said. Pilots told investigators they did not encounter turbulence, as the NTSB had said in a preliminary assessment the day after the crash. The trim system of the Bombardier Challenger 300 twin-engine jet was the subject of a
