Plymouth State student asks for help in search for cherished necklace containing father’s ashes

A Plymouth State University student is hoping to get the word out about a cherished necklace that was recently stolen from her car. Julienne Curran says a beloved blown-glass necklace containing her father’s ashes was stolen from her car when it was burglarized overnight. And now the Plymouth State senior is calling on whoever took it to return it to her no questions asked before she graduates. “I was heartbroken, it felt like I lost him all over again,” she said. Her message to the thief: “I’m glad you got a warm place to sleep, I’m glad you got something like a couple of bucks to get some food or whatever, but I really want the necklace back. I want my dad back for graduation, I want to have him when I walk. He means a lot more to me than he does to you.” She says she’s offering a $200 reward for the necklace. from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News Source: https://ift.tt/cP573gF

Boston warns of overdoses linked to fentanyl-laced cocaine

BOSTON (AP) — Boston public health officials have alerted health care providers in the city about a “concerning” increase in the number of opioid-related overdoses among people who believed they were using cocaine. The Boston Public Health Commission announced Thursday that city Emergency Medical Services responded to 11 suspected cases in one 24-hour period earlier this week. “Fentanyl is a highly dangerous substance that even in small amounts can lead to a fatal overdose, so we urge all residents, health care providers, recovery workers, and outreach workers to remain vigilant for signs of opioid overdose, including among individuals who use cocaine,” city Public Health Commissioner Dr. Bisola Ojikutu said in a statement. Fentanyl is a potent opioid 30 to 50 times stronger than heroin, the health commission said. It suppresses breathing, and at high doses can cause a fatal loss of oxygen. People who primarily use stimulants like cocaine may not have an opioid tolerance, making the

A first report on the Ohio toxic train wreck was released. Here’s what it found — and what investigators are still looking into

(CNN) — After  federal officials released an initial report  concluding that this month’s toxic train wreck in Ohio was completely preventable, investigators will begin examining procedures, practices and design prior to the derailment that has sparked long-term concerns among hundreds of frustrated residents. The National Transportation Safety Board on Thursday released its  preliminary report on the investigation  into the February 3 train crash in East Palestine, Ohio, where residents have been complaining about feeling sick after hazardous chemicals seeped into the air, water and soil. Ohio environmental officials made a civil referral this week asking the state attorney general’s office to begin “legal and/or equitable civil actions” against Norfolk Southern, which could result in a civil complaint if negotiations with the company were to fail. The NTSB report found that one of the train’s cars carrying plastic pellets was heated by a hot axle that sparked the initial fire, acc

Insomnia may be linked to higher risk of heart attack, study says

(CNN) — It’s no secret that sleep is important to your overall health, but a lack of sleep could have substantial effects on your heart, a new study shows. The researchers said people with insomnia are more likely to have a heart attack. Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder in the US, the researchers wrote in their report, noting that 10% to 15% of people in the US struggle with it. The meta-analysis of previously published research,  published Friday in the journal Clinical Cardiology , suggests that the potential association between insomnia and heart attack risk is strongest in women. Dr. Martha Gulati, director of prevention at the Cedars-Sinai Smidt Heart Institute, said that most of her patients are women and that insomnia is a noted risk factor for women who have had any form of ischemic heart disease. “Insomnia is actually quite common. We see it probably in 1 in 10 patients in the United States,” said Gulati, who was not involved in the new research. “It is my impres

(CNN) — Harvey Weinstein, the former Hollywood mogul already  serving a 23-year prison sentence  in New York, was sentenced in Los Angeles Thursday to an additional 16 years in prison for sexual assault charges. Weinstein was  convicted in December on charges of rape , sexual penetration by a foreign object and forcible oral copulation after a model and actress testified he assaulted her in a Beverly Hills hotel room in February 2013. Weinstein was also acquitted of one charge then, and the jury could not come to a unanimous decision on three other charges, including one related to  Jennifer Siebel Newsom , a filmmaker and the wife of California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Four counts connected to an unnamed woman who did not testify were also dropped during the trial. After convicting him, the jury  deadlocked on aggravating factors  that could have increased his sentence. Lexington FD: Residents able to evacuate after house fire burns through second floor

Crews in Lexington were able to contain a two-alarm fire that sent heavy flames and smoke shooting through a multistory home. Lexington Fire Chief Derek Sencabaugh told 7NEWS his department was first alerted around 9:40 a.m., when an occupant at a home on Suzanne Road called to report what they believed was a dryer fire. The fire soon rose to two-alarm status due to the heavy smoke and flames first responders saw upon arrival. The fire chief said much of the fire appeared to burn through the front of the home as well as the second floor. All residents were able to self-evacuate, according to Sencabaugh. The fire was ultimately contained to two rooms, with crews spending the rest of the morning monitoring the scene. Officials have not yet determined the exact cause of the fire, other than it appeared to start in a utility room used for laundry. from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News Source: https://ift.tt/FsKoNWY

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. (CNN) — Disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly was sentenced to 20 years in prison in a Chicago federal courtroom Thursday following his conviction last year on charges of child pornography and enticement of a minor, his second such lengthy sentencing in the past year. Kelly, 56, is already  serving a 30-year prison term  for his 2021 conviction on  racketeering and sex trafficking charges  in a New York federal court. US District Judge Harry D. One year would be served consecutively, or after that sentence is complete, he said. Kelly was  convicted in September  on three counts of production of child pornography and three counts of enticement of a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity. Sumner Tunnel Closures Now Planned For Next Two Summers

State highway officials will alter their plan to shut down the aging Sumner Tunnel for significant repairs, cutting the amount of time the major thoroughfare is closed this year while likely extending the total project timeline. The Department of Transportation announced Thursday that it would no longer close the one-way tunnel from East Boston to the city’s downtown center from May through Sept. 4. Instead of a single four-month span, the tunnel will now be shuttered for eight-and-a-half weeks from July 5 to Aug. 31 followed by another two-month closure in July and August 2024. Officials said bifurcating the closure across two summers will minimize the impact on commuters given the typically lighter traffic at that time of year, when schools are not in session. “We are pleased to be announcing a shorter closure of the Sumner Tunnel to traffic this summer, basically half as long this summer as previously planned,” Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver said in a statement. “Since

The first-ever state budget season for Gov. Maura Healey will feature a pair of addresses before audiences eager for her and the Legislature to enact long-sought tax reform. Healey will be the headlining guest at two regional business group events early next month, starting with her first speech to the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce on March 2 and followed by a visit to the Springfield Regional Chamber on March 10. The Greater Boston Chamber event announced Tuesday will take place the morning after the March 1 due date for Healey’s fiscal year 2024 state budget proposal, a key deadline that will kick off months of deliberations on Beacon Hill and provide an early indication of what kind of policy approach the Democrat will take. And it’s not just the state spending bill that will be fresh in business leaders’ minds: Healey has also said she plans to file a “tax package” alongside the budget. While she has not yet detailed what will be in that proposal, Healey  described it as  “
