The 21-time Grand Slam champion said Saturday on his social media accounts that he’s been training as if he’ll play at Flushing Meadows when the last major of the year begins Aug. 29. “I am preparing as if I will be allowed to compete, while I await to hear if there is any room for me to travel to US. Fingers crossed!”  he wrote . Although he’s been included on the  U.S. Open entry list , the United States does not allow unvaccinated noncitizens to enter the country, which is why the Serb needed to sit out big events in Indian Wells, California, and Miami this season. Dems seem headed for climate, health win after ups and downs

WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s been more than a year in the making and has seen plenty of ups and downs. Now, a Democratic economic package focused on climate and health care faces hurdles but seems headed toward party-line passage by Congress next month. Approval would let President Joe Biden and his party claim a triumph on top priorities as November’s elections approach. They have not forgotten that they came close to approving a far grander version of the bill last year, only to see Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., one of their most conservative and contrarian members, torpedo it at the eleventh hour. This time, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has crafted a compromise package with Manchin, to the surprise of everyone, transforming the West Virginian from pariah to partner. The measure is more modest than earlier versions but still checks boxes on issues that make Democrats giddy. Here’s what they face: WHAT’S IN IT? The measure would raise $739 billion in revenue over 10 years

Biden tests positive for COVID-19, returns to isolation

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 again Saturday, slightly more than three days after he was  cleared to exit coronavirus isolation , the White House said, in a rare case of “rebound” following treatment with an anti-viral drug. White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor  said in a letter  that Biden “has experienced no reemergence of symptoms, and continues to feel quite well.” In accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, Biden will reenter isolation for least five days. The agency says most rebound cases remain mild and that severe disease during that period has not been reported. Word of Biden’s positive test came just two hours after the White House announced a presidential visit to Michigan this coming Tuesday to highlight the passage of a bill to promote domestic high-tech manufacturing. Biden had also been scheduled to visit his home in Wilmingto

Jewish volunteers bond with Ukrainian kids at summer camp

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A 5-year-old girl’s drawing at a summer camp in Poland’s capital caught the eye of one of her counselors. Why did she use black and white, and not red or pink, to make a heart, Rabbi Ilana Baird asked the child. The girl, sighing heavily, said it was black like the dog she left behind in Ukraine. Baird, who lives in California, volunteered with several other Jews originally from Russia or other parts of the former Soviet Union to mentor Ukrainian refugee children at the camp in Warsaw. The program, which ended Friday, was designed to give some joy to youngsters traumatized by war, to help prepare them for a new school year in Poland, and to give their mothers some time to themselves. After performing puppet shows and reading stories to her group of 5- and 6-year-old campers, painting a lot of little faces and dispensing lots of big hugs, the rabbi saw another heart drawing. This one was pin

An entire North Carolina police department resigned after a Black woman town manager was hired

(CNN) — The mass exodus of an entire police department after the hiring of a Black town manager in North Carolina has opened a conversation about public safety and race relations in a small town of just over 1,500 residents. Last week, the entire police department in Kenly, North Carolina, resigned, citing a “hostile” work environment less than two months after Justine Jones, a Black woman, began her role as the town’s newly selected city manager. Joy Wright, a local business owner, said the community is concerned about what the collective police retreat means for the future of the town. Wright also said she was mostly frustrated because the town hadn’t been keeping residents in the loop with any developments. “It’s just weird, and for us to not have any information as to what to expect,” Wright said. “Are we going to have police? Are we going to have a town manager?” Following an emergency, closed-door meeting last week, the Kenly town council released a statement this week saying

Prosecutors: Vermont man charged with killing mom at sea poses flight risk

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. Federal prosecutors say a Vermont man charged with killing his mother at sea in 2016 in a plot to inherit millions should remain behind bars pending trial because he poses a flight risk and danger to others. The prosecutors filed a motion in U.S. District Court in Burlington, Vermont, on Friday, opposing a request by Nathan Carman to be released. Carman, 28, who lives in Vernon, was charged in May with killing his mother, Linda Carman of Middletown, Connecticut, during a fishing trip in 2016 off the coast of New England in which his boat sank. He was found floating in a raft and rescued eight days after departing from a Rhode Island marina. He pleaded not guilty in May in his mother’s death. Prosecutors also have accused Carman of killing his grandfather, John Chakalos, who they say was shot in his home in Windsor, Connecticut, in 2013 as part of a scheme to obtain money and property from his grandfather’s estat

Fed makes history with second massive rate hike in as many months

(CNN) — What seemed unfathomable just six months ago — a 75-basis-point rate hike by the Federal Reserve — has now happened twice in a row. At the conclusion of its July monetary policymaking meeting, members of the US central bank on Wednesday once again approved a supersized interest rate hike of   three-quarters of a percentage point. Members voted unanimously in favor of the aggressive move to tackle white-hot inflation. The unprecedented action emphasizes how far the Fed is willing to push the economy to temper rising costs for Americans amid the highest price increases since the 1980s. “Recent indicators of spending and production have softened,” Fed officials said in an official statement. “Nonetheless, job gains have been robust in recent months, and the unemployment rate has remained low.” Inflation is still elevated, they said, “reflecting supply and demand imbalances related to the pandemic, higher food and energy prices, and broader price pressures.” In prior months, th

Passage of anti-hair discrimination law in Mass. 5 years in the making for Cook twins

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. The twin sisters who inspired the passage of the anti-hair discrimination bill, the CROWN Act, in Massachusetts, grew emotional at the ceremonial signing of the bill five years in the making. “It feels amazing to know we’ve changed so many lives, seeing the governor sign the bill, just amazing,” Mya Cook, one of the twins, said. “I can’t even believe we’re here today and this is actually happening.” Now, people of color in the state will be protected against discrimination based on their hair style and texture. The bill was set into motion in 2017, when Deanna and Mya Cook were punished by their Malden high school for wearing braided extensions. The administration said the style violated school rules, but the sisters refused to change their hair and began rallying to end similar discriminatory policies. Gov. Charlie Baker signed the CROWN Act into law with two pens, giving one to each sister. “When you’re wear
