A Democratic candidate for the Rhode Island State Senate was allegedly punched in the face by her Republican opponent during an abortion protest at the state capitol Friday night. The confrontation was caught on camera by other protestors at the rally. Following the event, Jeann Lugo was arrested on assault and disorderly conduct charges and announced that he will be stepping down from the state senate race. Lugo is a Providence police officer and was placed on administrative leave following the incident. Eighteen people are facing charges after state police seized more than 1,000 fireworks brought into Massachusetts over the weekend, officials said Monday. Troopers issued summonses to seven people for illegal possession of fireworks on Friday, along with summons to six people on Saturday and five on Sunday, police said. The fireworks had all been purchased out of state, according to police. Officials said the seized fireworks included sparklers, Roman candles, fountains, rockets and aerial shells. This comes as hundreds of protests take place across the nation since the Supreme Court’s ruling against abortion was announced Friday. “Not the church! Not the state! Police are investigating after several men allegedly stole a delivery driver’s car in Dartmouth Saturday, officials said. Officers responding to reports of a robbery on Walsh Street at 9:45 p.m. were told the driver had been making a delivery when several masked men approached him and demanded money, police said. The driver immediately ran away and called police from his restaurant, and when they returned to the scene they found the driver’s white 2013 Honda CRV was gone. No one was injured. (CNN) — A person was killed by an alligator near Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, according to police. The alligator took hold of a person near the edge of a retention pond on Friday, according to a Facebook post from the Horry County Police Department, which responded to the scene. Following the attack in the Myrtle Beach Golf and Yacht Club, the alligator returned to the retention pond, the Sun News reported. The victim’s body was recovered from the pond and the alligator was removed and euthanized, police say. The police department’s investigation is still underway, authorities said, and the victim’s identity and a cause of death have not yet been released. The police department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CNN. “Our hearts go out to the family and community members impacted by this tragic incident,” wrote the department. DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit woman has been charged in the death of her 3-year-old son after police found the boy’s decomposing body in a basement freezer. The 31-year-old woman is charged with first-degree murder, child abuse and torture and concealing the death of an individual, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Sunday. She was scheduled to appear in court in Detroit on Sunday. “The alleged facts in this case have astounded even the seriously jaded,” Worthy said. “Our children continue to be at risk — not just from gun violence but also from the alleged murderer that lives in the house with them.” Detroit police officers and members of Child Protective Services were conducting a welfare check at the home early Friday when they discovered the boy’s body, Police Chief James White said.
