In his rush, he didn’t bring his gun. He spent the next 35 to 45 agonizing minutes scanning the children fleeing Robb Elementary School for his 9-year-old “firecracker,” Jacklyn. All the while, he yearned to run in himself — and  grew increasingly agitated , along with other parents, that the police  weren’t doing more  to stop the gunman who holed up in a classroom, killing kids. “A lot of us were arguing with the police, ‘You all need to go in there. (CNN) — Millions of Americans traveling this holiday weekend are being greeted by unprecedented prices at the gas pump. The national average for regular gasoline rose to a fresh record of $4.62 a gallon on Monday, according to AAA. That’s up by a penny from Sunday and 44 cents more expensive than a month ago. Gas prices are up sharply from last Memorial Day, when they averaged $3.05 a gallon, according to AAA. Seven states are now averaging $5-a-gallon gas, with the latest being Illinois (rounded up from $4.996). New York and Arizona are just pennies away from hitting that milestone. And there are no states where gas prices average less than $4.10 a gallon. In spite of high prices, AAA estimates that 34.9 million people are traveling by car this holiday weekend, up 4.6% from last year. Even after adjusting for inflation, gas prices are very elevated. A dedicated group made a 65-mile trek from Boston Common to the National Cemetery in Bourne to honor fallen service members. The journey is called “Vest Up 4 the Fallen.” Those who walked this Memorial Day, many of whom were veterans themselves, said though their journey was hard, it paled in comparison to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. “We (who) served in the military have been side-by-side with the fallen, said participant Kenneth Kato. “I do it (for) two of my comrades who have been lost downrange. HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) — Fireworks shows at a popular New Hampshire beach were canceled for Memorial Day weekend and will be put on hold for several weeks because endangered piping plovers are nesting there. Local officials hope they can still have fireworks on the Fourth of July at Hampton Beach, which is close to the Massachusetts border,  the Portsmouth Herald reported . Hampton Beach Village District Chairman Chuck Rage said two nests were found on the beach. Piping plovers are endangered in New Hampshire and threatened nationally. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Endangered Wildlife Program has been monitoring and protecting breeding piping plovers and their habitat on the seacoast since 1997. The sighting of endangered piping plovers prompted officials to cancel fireworks shows at the beginning of the summer season at Hampton Beach last year too. UVALDE, Texas (AP) — The Justice Department said Sunday it will review the law enforcement response to the Texas school shooting, an unusual federal look back prompted by questions about the shifting and at times contradictory information from authorities that have enraged a community in shock and sorrow. Department spokesman Anthony Coley said the review would be conducted in a fair, impartial and independent manner and the findings would be made public. CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — Police in Tennessee said six people were wounded during an exchange of gunfire in a downtown Chattanooga business district. At least one person of interest was detained shortly after the shooting Saturday night, police spokesperson Jeremy Eames said Sunday in a news release. The statement did not indicate whether anyone was charged. Officers who were patrolling the area heard gunshots and saw multiple people shooting weapons and numerous people fleeing the area. Officers began rendering aid to the victims and assisting others to safety. Several gunshot victims were taken to a hospital and two of the injuries were life threatening, Eames said. The ages of the victims were not immediately released but most were believed to be teenagers and young adults.    (CNN) — Gas prices and Covid cases are high as the US rolls into Memorial Day weekend and the busy summer travel season. The tangled web of global restrictions is still in play, but most Americans are planning to be out and about this summer. According to the US Travel Association, about six in 10 Americans are planning at least one summer trip. Gas prices are definitely a factor. US Travel is reporting that 63% of American travelers say rising gas prices will impact their decision to travel in the next six months. That’s certainly the case for Eric Stevens, a single dad in Los Angeles who has decided he won’t be going anywhere. He’s spending about $180 a week on gas for his day-to-day obligations. Typically, he and his kids would choose a travel destination within about one tank of gas from their home in Encino. “We’ve done Tahoe, we’ve done San Francisco, Carpenteria, Santa Barbara. UVALDE, Texas (AP) — Frustrated onlookers urged police officers to charge into the Texas elementary school where a gunman’s rampage killed  19 children and two teachers , witnesses said Wednesday, as investigators worked to track the massacre that lasted upwards of 40 minutes and ended when the 18-year-old shooter was killed by a Border Patrol team. “Go in there! Go in there!” nearby women shouted at the officers soon after the attack began, said Juan Carranza, 24, who saw the scene from outside his house, across the street from Robb Elementary School in the close-knit town of Uvalde. Carranza said the officers did not go in. One student has been arrested and a temporary shelter-in-place was enacted on Thursday afternoon. Haverhill Police responded to the high school for a report of a “potentially armed student making threats.” The building was put in a shelter-in-place and has since been lifted. The student who allegedly made the threat was located and no weapons were found, police said. Haverhill Police noted that one student was placed under arrest.
