Half the players who opted out last year no longer with team

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — More than half of the 67 NFL players who opted out of the 2020 season amid the COVID-19 pandemic are no longer with the same team. Almost two dozen aren’t on anyone’s roster. Thirty-three of the players who opted out have returned to open 2021 training camp with their same team. Twenty-nine were waived or released before camps opened, four retired and one was traded. That represents a whopping 50.7% turnover rate for this subset of players, far outdistancing the average annual NFL roster turnover rate of 36.2%. Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk isn’t the least bit surprised that nearly three dozen of the opt outs never put on their same uniform again. “Oh no, not at all. I mean, this game has no loyalty, let’s be real,” said Faulk, who carved out a 12-year playing career with the Colts and Rams that landed him in Canton a decade ago. “The reality is if they can find a way to win

Walmart mandates vaccines for workers at headquarters

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. NEW YORK (AP) — Walmart is requiring that all workers at its headquarters as well as managers who travel within the U.S. be vaccinated against COVID-19 by Oct. 4. The Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer is also reversing its mask policy for its employees, including vaccinated ones, who work in stores, clubs, distribution facilities and warehouses. Going forward, they will be required to wear masks in areas with high infection rates. The moves are part of a series of sweeping measures the nation’s largest retailer and private employer announced Friday to help curb the spread of the virus and drive more of its workers to get the shot in the arm. The vaccine mandate excludes frontline workers, who the company says have a lower vaccination rate than management. But it’s hoping that management will serve as an inspiration for its workers. “We’re asking our leaders, which already have a higher vaccination rate, to m

Rover promises a network of ‘trusted sitters and dog walkers.’ That wasn’t enough to save these pets

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News.  (CNN) — Like many new pandemic pet owners, Nia Morgan knew her puppy, Zorro, had grown very attached to her due to all the time she spent at home with him. So she was understandably hesitant about leaving him for the first time with a sitter she’d hired through Rover, a popular platform for booking dog and cat sitters. Morgan took what she thought were adequate steps to ensure her timid then 9-month-old poodle mix would be in good hands during an upcoming trip. She interviewed a Rover sitter and did a trial run — dropping Zorro and a friend’s dog off together with the sitter for the day. Zorro’s “temperament was good,” said Morgan, after picking up her dog, which made her feel comfortable enough to book the same sitter for a five-day trip. One day after she left, the sitter said her phone had broken and she was using her computer to send updates through the platform. Morgan said she wasn’t sent photos of Zorro —

Biomass power rules leave 35 towns in industry ‘crosshairs’

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have let the Baker administration know that they are not happy with proposed regulations that would effectively protect environmental justice communities and surrounding areas from new wood-burning power generation facilities while singling out just 35 towns as possible plant hosts. In April, the Baker administration  announced  that its proposed updates to the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard regulations would prohibit biomass projects from qualifying for the RPS program if they are located within an environmental justice community or within five miles of an environmental justice community. The latest version of that  plan  got a hearing before the Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy on Friday, with Department of Energy Resources Commissioner Patrick Woodcock detailing the proposed changes for lawmakers. The RPS governs the increasing amount of clean energy that utilities and municipal light plants must purchase eac

After court victories, Michael Jackson estate eyes revival

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Michael Jackson’s musical legacy never left, but a kind of comeback is coming. With a series of court victories that bring the end to serious legal crises, with a Broadway show beginning and a Cirque du Soleil show returning after a long pandemic pause, the Jackson business is on the upswing 12 years after the pop superstar’s death. Very recently, things looked grim. The 2019 HBO documentary “  Leaving Neverland  ” raised child molestation allegations anew. The once-dead lawsuits brought by the two men featured in it had been  revived  by changes in the law. And a decision in the estate’s appeal of a $700 million tax bill was taking years to arrive. “I was always optimistic,” John Branca, the entertainment attorney who worked with Jackson through many of his biggest triumphs and now serves as co-executor of his estate, told The Associated Press in an interview at his Beverly Hills home. “Michael inspired the planet and his music still does. There was nev

Pelosi, Schumer to huddle with Biden on voting legislation

WASHINGTON (AP) — Top congressional Democrats will huddle with President Joe Biden at the White House on Friday, looking to salvage their effort to enact federal voting legislation that could counter state laws restricting access to the ballot. The meeting between Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer comes after Democrats were forced back to the drawing board with their signature voting bill, called the For the People Act, which Senate Republicans blocked with a filibuster last month. Since then, they’ve worked on retooling the proposal and will present a framework to Biden, according to a senior congressional aide who discussed the private deliberations on condition of anonymity. But there’s little sign even a rewritten proposal will win the GOP support necessary to pass under current Senate rules. That’s left Democrats stalled out and with few options on an issue of high priority to many in the party. “I think that we’ve made actual progress.

Former Boston police mechanic agrees to plead guilty to scheme to embezzle more than $250K

A former mechanic for the Boston Police Department has pleaded guilty to charges in connection with a scheme to embezzle more than $250,000 from the department. Bahram Gharony, 36, of Boston allegedly used his position to order parts and supplies that he purported were for the police fleet but were actually converted and sold to others, according to a release issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office Friday. In an effort to conceal the scheme, Gharony allegedly submitted fraudulent and altered invoices to the department for the parts, tools, and supplies he falsely claimed were ordered for the fleet. Additionally, Gharony claimed that he had lawfully purchased the items through a discount available to Boston police when selling the items to others. A date for a plea hearing has not yet been scheduled by the court.  from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News Source: https://ift.tt/3rHg9Na

Saturn will glow brightly in the sky next week. Here’s how to see it

(CNN) — See Saturn shine brightly for this once-a-year nighttime spectacle. On August 1 and 2, Saturn will be at opposition, meaning the Earth will be located between the ringed planet and the sun. This is when the outer planet will be at its most luminous, making for a brilliant night sky view. Saturn’s opposition is at 2 a.m. ET on August 2, or 11 p.m. PT for those on the West Coast,  according to EarthSky . Once Venus sinks below the horizon after the sun sets, Jupiter will be the brightest object in the sky, EarthSky said. To find Saturn, look just west of Jupiter. If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of Saturn’s famous rings, you’ll need to whip out a telescope, according to the  Farmer’s Almanac . “Sunday night into Monday morning much of the Midwest and portions of western California will see mostly clear skies,” CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said. “A swath of cloudy skies will exist across the Northwest into the Rockies, across many southern states and into the Northeast.”

NFL’s top stat is COVID-19 vaccine percentages

The NFL’s most discussed stat has been COVID-19 vaccination percentages. As the first week of training camp kicked off, numbers continue to increase while debate persists. So far, 87.9 percent of players have had at least one shot of the vaccine and 19 teams have more than 90% of players vaccinated, including seven with more than 95% vaccinated. The league can’t mandate the vaccine but it made its stance clear through strict protocols for players who don’t get it. “I wouldn’t have got the vaccine without the protocols they are enforcing on us,” Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill said this week. “It’s a personal decision for everyone. Everyone has to make the best decision for them and their families. That is kind of our mindset in this building, but they are trying to force your hand. … “I love this game, I love this team, I want to be able to compete and do the things that are important to build chemistry and win football games. Ultimately, that forced my hand into getti

Gooding Jr. could owe millions after ignoring rape lawsuit

NEW YORK (AP) — Actor Cuba Gooding Jr. could be on the hook for millions of dollars in damages after failing to respond to a lawsuit that accused him of raping a woman in New York City in 2013. U.S. District Judge Paul Crotty issued a default judgment against Gooding on Thursday, saying it appeared the Oscar-winning “Jerry Maguire” star was willfully ignoring the lawsuit and that waiting for him any longer would be unfair to his accuser. Judge Crotty said that under the law, the 53-year-old Gooding’s failure to respond and defend himself in the lawsuit constituted an admission of liability. The judge gave Gooding a final deadline of Sept. 7 to participate in the case. After that, the judge said, he’ll decide on damages. The plaintiff in the lawsuit, identified in court papers as Jane Doe, alleged Gooding raped her without protection after meeting her at a Greenwich Village VIP lounge and luring her to his hotel room under false pretenses. She is seeking $6 million in damages. No

MyPillow advertiser shunning Fox for refusal to air ad

NEW YORK (AP) — One of Fox News’ most visible advertisers, Mike Lindell and his MyPillow line of products, has pulled commercials from the network over a refusal to air an ad promoting discredited claims of election fraud. Fox confirmed the moves on Friday, which were first reported by The Wall Street Journal. Lindell’s face is well-known to Fox viewers. He told the Journal he spent $50 million last year advertising on Fox. Lindell has publicly promoted Trump’s false allegations of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election he lost to President Joe Biden and had sought to promote a symposium next months where some of the claims are to be presented. “It’s unfortunate Mr. Lindell has chosen to pause his commercial time on Fox News given the level of success he’s experienced in building his brand through advertising on the number one cable news network,” Fox said in a statement. A representative for Lindell did not immediately return a message seeking comment. from Boston News, We
