Slush, snow lead to slippery roads in northwest Mass.

Areas north and west of I-495 are dealing with slippery conditions on the roads as an icy storm makes its way through Massachusetts. Officials said 750 state highway crews are treating and clearing the roads west and north of Boston. Most drivers said it was best to go slow and easy. “Everything is ice,” said Marisol Dittami. “The roads are not very good, but once you hit the highway … it’s at least better.” Police responded to numerous spinouts on Route 2 and more snow and slush were present in western Massachusetts. Power outages were reported in Berkshire County as well. On Route 3 in Tyngsborough, a dashboard camera caught the scary moment a white BMW spun out all the way across the three-lane highway before coming to a stop against the far side guard rail. In Westminster, the wintery mix downed tree limbs which in turn took out power lines and blocked roadways. An ice storm warning is in effect for much of western Massachusetts including parts of Worcester County until Tuesd

‘So full of life’: Family members identify 13-year-old killed in alleged drunk driving crash in Pembroke

Grief-stricken family members have identified a 13-year-old girl who died in a suspected drunken-driving crash in Pembroke on Sunday morning that left two other people injured. Claire Zisserson was pronounced dead at Boston Children’s Hospital Sunday night, hours after the Subaru hatchback she was riding in on Route 139 was struck by a Hi-Way Safety Systems, Inc. truck driven by 31-year-old Gregory Goodsell, of Marshfield. The driver of the hatchback, a 50-year woman, and a second 13-year-old were left seriously injured. The teen remains in the hospital at this time. “She was a very happy person. Very full of life,” family friend Jake McPherson said. “Whenever I went over to her family’s house, whenever we went out, she was always giggling. Always laughing.” Goodsell was ordered held without bail Monday in Plymouth District Court after pleading not guilty to charges including manslaughter while operating while under the influence, driving while under the influence of alcohol and ca

48-year-old elephant euthanized at San Diego Zoo

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Tembo, a 48-year-old elephant, was euthanized at the San Diego Zoo after a sudden change in her health following longtime treatment for age-related ailments, the zoo announced Monday. The female African bush elephant died Sunday. “She had been under veterinary care, including stem cell therapy to alleviate age-related ailments over a long period of time,” the zoo tweeted. “On Saturday, animal care staff noted a sudden change in Tembo’s condition, including behaviors that indicated severe discomfort,” the zoo tweeted. “After evaluating quality of life options, staff made the difficult decision to compassionately euthanize her.” Tembo had lived at the zoo since 1983. Before that she was privately owned and had been an animal actor, the zoo said. Tembo appeared in the 1974 television series “Born Free.” Tembo was one of four elephants at the zoo. Biden questioned about sharing 2020 ticket with Republican

EXETER, N.H. (AP) — Former Vice President Joe Biden entertained the idea of choosing a Republican as a 2020 running mate as he campaigned Monday — though he conceded he didn’t have anyone specific in mind. A voter told Biden during an event Monday afternoon in Exeter, New Hampshire, that her son had wondered if the Democratic presidential contender would consider choosing a Republican as a running mate. “The answer is, I would, but I can’t think of one now,” Biden said as the crowd laughed. Biden went on to say there are “some really decent Republicans that are out there still,” before adding that “they’ve got to step up.” At the start of Monday’s event, Biden reminded voters his goal is to unite the country. “I refuse to accept the proposition that we’ll be in a state of perpetual war with Republicans, because you can’t govern the country if that’s the case,” Biden said. “We are a democracy, and our democracy depends upon consensus. Local synagogues increase security in response to bloody New York attack

SAN DIEGO – Security at local synagogues has been tightened in response to a series of recent attacks against Jews and their religious institutions, including a machete rampage at a New York rabbi's home over the weekend. Five people were hospitalized as the result of the machete attack on Saturday at the home of a rabbi in Monsey, 36 miles north of New York City. A 38-year-old suspect was later arrested in Harlem in connection with the attack, which New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has called an "act of domestic terrorism." A family attorney said the suspect has a long history of mental illness and hospitalizations . “We feel the need to be more vigilant, to be more aware, to know our environment,” said Rabbi Zalman Carlebach of the Chabad of Downtown. "The last day in Chanukah, we are out in the open. We are not going let this have any darkness towards us or our communities." The Anti Defamation League is now calling for new domestic anti-terrorism legislat

Boy sets lawn on fire with magnifying glass he got for Christmas

MCKINNEY, Texas — A family in Texas found themselves doing damage control on Christmas Day after their 12-year-old son accidentally set their lawn on fire with a magnifying glass. Nissa-Lynn Parson posted photos on Facebook of what she said is going down in the family history book as one of the most memorable Christmas Days to date. “My 12-year-old son Cayden received a magnifying glass, which we thought was for reading, but instead he tried to see if he could light a fire with it,” the post said . Cayden and his two brothers went out in the driveway after opening presents to “burn a couple of holes in some newspaper” with the magnifying glass he had just received when an unexpected fire broke out, Parson told CNN. The wind caught the newspaper and blew embers into the lawn, ultimately causing the grass to catch fire. “Everything was under control until the boys came running into the house telling us that a corner of the lawn was on fire and the Christmas lights were melting,” Pars

Woman, 60, arrested after freeway chase in white Mercedes

SAN DIEGO -- Police Monday arrested a woman in her 60s who led them on an hour-long chase that started in Del Cerro and ended near the UC San Diego campus. Just before 3 p.m. on Del Cerro Boulevard and Rockhurst Drive, police officers signaled for the driver of a white Mercedes-Benz to pull over, but the woman did not comply, said Officer Tony Martinez of the San Diego Police Department. The pursuit ended shortly after 4 p.m. at Nobel Drive and Interstate 5, when the driver pulled over. But she refused to exit the vehicle, so officers broke one of the windows and used pepper spray to get her into custody, Martinez said. The woman's name was not immediately released. Martinez said he could not confirm a broadcast that the driver was wanted on a felony warrant, but did say that officers reported "having problems with her in the past." from fox5sandiego.com Source: https://ift.tt/39ta0L2

Bot or not? Mystery over anonymous user retweeted by Trump

CHICAGO (AP) — The Twitter user goes by Gigi, though sometimes Sophia, Emma or Leona. The occupation is listed at various times as teacher, historian, documentary writer and model. There’s been speculation about whether this person is really a woman — or even human. But bot or not, the account has  gotten the attention of the president  and his Twitter followers. Just before midnight Friday, Trump retweeted a tweet from the user, then going by Surfermom77, that included the alleged name of the anonymous whistleblower whose complaint ultimately led to  Trump’s impeachment  by the House. Critics worry the move could invite retaliation against the individual. The account highlights how the internet has given everyday Americans — and those posing as them — a direct line of communication to the president, even if people don’t always know who they are. While anonymity on Twitter allows people in oppressive communities to speak online freely, it can also allow people to harass others

Sheriff: Almost all upgrades from Vegas shooting implemented

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas police have implemented almost all their self-identified upgrades stemming from a review of officers’ responses to the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history more than two years ago, the elected head of the department said Monday. Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said in a statement the agency has enacted 84 of 93 recommendations outlined in a departmental self-critique he made public last July. On the eve of a fireworks extravaganza expected to draw more than 300,000 people to Las Vegas Strip, Lombardo said the “after-action review” has shaped preparation and training for future mass casualty incidents in a region with 2.2 million residents that draws more than 40 million visitors a year. The nine items that weren’t completed weren’t identified. Officer Alejandra Zambrano, a department spokeswoman, said she could not immediately say what they are. Crews prepare for icy roads and downed trees in Massachusetts

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. Road and power crews across Massachusetts are gearing up for a storm that could dump half an inch of ice in certain areas. The storm moving through the commonwealth Sunday evening into Tuesday will bring snow and rain, but more importantly ice and sleet. “The sleet is really difficult to deal with. It’s tough to get off the road,” said MassDOT foreman Michael Pelletier. “You scrape it, salt it, and within an hour it’s right back on there. So it’s really just continual treatment of the road.” The ice is expected to cling, and Eversource and National Grid say they have crews at the ready to respond to weighted down trees and power lines. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency is monitoring everything from slick roads to widespread power outages. “Our biggest concern here is just, what are the conditions during the storm and post storm? Polish PM accuses Putin of lying about outbreak of WWII

This content collected from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News. Putin has said on several recent occasions that Poland bears responsibility for the outbreak of the war, deepening tensions between the two Slavic nations. On Friday the Russian ambassador to Poland was summoned to the Polish Foreign Ministry in protest. World War II began in 1939 when Poland was invaded first by Nazi Germany, then by the Soviet Union two weeks later. The dual occupation came days after the two totalitarian states signed a pact with a secret protocol to carve up Poland and the Baltic states. Some 6 million Polish citizens were killed in the war. “President Putin has lied about Poland on numerous occasions, and he has always done it deliberately

Officials investigating blaze in Brockton garage with working stove, electrical wiring

Firefighters are investigating a blaze that destroyed a garage with a working wood stove and electrical wires in Brockton on Sunday. Firefighters responding to a reported structure fire on Market Street at noon found the garage fully engulfed, Fire Chief Michael Williams said. “When crews got here it was fully involved….the fire was well ahead of what we could do when we first got here,” Williams said. The garage was a total loss and three vehicles were destroyed as well, but no one was hurt. Williams said officials were looking at elements that made battling the blaze more difficult than a typical garage fire. “We have found a wood stove that was operating on the inside. That’s part of the investigation right now,” Williams said. “It was also fully wired in there. So we have a wire inspector on scene who is also investigating.” from Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News Source: https://ift.tt/2u2Rf0V

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland’s prime minister said Sunday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been lying in remarks blaming Poland for the outbreak of World War II, and argued that Putin is doing it to deflect from recent Russian political failures. “President Putin has lied about Poland on numerous occasions, and he has always done it deliberately,” Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said in a statement. “It usually ha

Official: 1 dead from plane crash in Maryland neighborhood

LANHAM, Md. (AP) — A small plane crashed in the Maryland suburbs of the nation’s capital Sunday, hitting a home’s carport and killing the lone person aboard the aircraft, authorities said. The plane came down in the neighborhood of Lanham shortly before 3 p.m., striking the carport before it broke into many pieces on the ground, said Mark Brady, a spokesman for Prince George’s County fire and emergency services. The plane and the carport caught fire, but the flames have been extinguished, he said. Brady said there were no reports of injuries on the ground. It wasn’t immediately clear if someone was in the house at the time. The carport was attached to the house, Brady said. The identity of the person killed wasn’t immediately known. The National Transportation Safety Board was expected to take over the investigation, according to Brady. The home is near an intersection about 2 miles (3 kilometers) from an airport in College Park, Maryland. Lanham is in the northeastern section of

US Rep John Lewis of Georgia says he has pancreatic cancer

ATLANTA (AP) — Congressman John Lewis of Georgia announced Sunday that he has stage IV pancreatic cancer, vowing he will stay in office and fight the disease with the tenacity which he fought racial discrimination and other inequalities since the civil rights era. Lewis, the youngest and last survivor of the Big Six civil rights activists in a group once led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., said in a statement that cancer was discovered this month during a routine medical visit. He said subsequent tests confirmed the diagnosis of stage IV pancreatic cancer. “I have been in some kind of fight — for freedom, equality, basic human rights — for nearly my entire life. I have never faced a fight quite like the one I have now,” he said in a statement. His statement added: While I am clear-eyed about the prognosis, doctors have told me that recent medical advances have made this type of cancer treatable in many cases, that treatment options are no longer as debilitating as they once were

Jewish leaders urge action after another ‘senseless’ attack

NEW YORK (AP) — When a suspect walked into the home of a rabbi celebrating Hanukkah and stabbed five celebrants it was the latest in a week of anti-Semitic attacks in the nation’s most demographically diverse area — and an incident that reverberated across the country. “Again, here we are: mourning another act of senseless anti-Semitic violence committed against our community and praying for those who were the victims of this hate,” Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said in a statement Sunday following the attack a day earlier in Monsey, New York. “This is at least the 10th anti-Semitic incident to hit the New York/New Jersey area in just the last week. When will enough be enough? These heinous attacks make something abundantly clear: The Jewish community needs greater protection,” Greenblatt said. Since the  Dec. 10 massacre at a kosher grocery store  in New Jersey there have been 19 anti-Semitic incidents in the U.S., including 16 in New York and New Jersey, according
